When the synthetic oils first appeared they would tend to find any slight loose gasket and leak. The oil mfgr's figured out that their customers were not too happy about this so the worked on an additive package that would give the oil more resistance to leaking. Today’s synthetics work just fine, no leaking.
Now, the oil rings on an older engine is another story. The additives in synthetic might cause some blow by the rings and your oil consumption might go up until the synthetic builds deposits back under the rings. Now this is only for an older high hour engine. Relatively low hour engines it doesn't have time to build much deposits unless you run your engine oil forever. I have a 2000 Intrepid that I switched to Mobil 1 at 60,000 miles, it started using a quart (not leaking) every 2,500 miles. Now with 169,000 miles it can go 6,000 miles before using a quart.
I don't think your friend would have any problem switching to synthetic in his quad, not leaking or using oil.

yes if you switch to synthetic with an engine that has moderate wear or is older; synthetic oil really isnt recommended because it is so thin and will blow by the rings and piston and the engine will burn it...but synthetic is by far the best oil cus it mantains it's viscosity index over a wide range of temps where as petroleum will loose some of it's lubricity when it gets hot....
