Default diagnostic ?? for scrammy 400 or any 2 strk ownrs

My '99 Scrambler quite while riding. Can't get it going again... It has spark and the secondary coil ohms out to spec. Took the carb all apart and thoroughly cleaned it/checked it... all looks fine. Installed new plug and freshened the plug wire boot connection. Shot either in and it fired once. Now there is nothing even with either. The plug is dry, which leads my to believe the motor is getting no fuel. There is fuel in the fuel bowl of the carb and I have checked all obvious items.

Could the ignition timing be off? or a prob. w/ the CDI? I've heard if the CDI goes bad, there is no spark. I would appreciate any input on solving this puzzle!

Check the compression, 120 is in the normal range. Less than 100 it needs to come apart, it won't pull fuel into the cylinder if the rings aren't sealing properly....

Thanks... I did think of that... haven't checked w/ a gauge yet, but it does have pressure w/ my finger over the hole. I just bought the machine and the kid told me it had a fresh top end (5 hrs.)... thanks for the psi info, I will check it.

quad has basic upgrades... K&N, silencer, clutch. 5hrs. on new top end... not sure of details. Engine flat out won't fire, choke or not. Plug is dry after cranking. Shot of either w/ WOT gets it started. This would lead me to believe there is adequate vacuum into the cylinder and that no gas is going in. My next task will be to disassemble the carb for a 2nd time. Is there anything inparticular I should check in the carb? The bowl is always full of fuel.

Jetting!!!! MAke sure you are running the correct jets also. Did you purchase this locally? I know that I normally run a 250 main in my situation, and I switch to a 260 for the dunes. If I run the 260 locally or in the trail, it will bog and die and will not start back up unless I run starter fluid to it. What was the temp when you rode it? 2 strokes are so finiky! You have to keep air temp., altitude in the factor.

Not saying this is your problem, but cirtainly something to check.

2-strokes are NOT that finnicky! I've run my Xplorer from 15-90 degrees F with the factory jetting. It's more likely that there's gunk plugging up the carb. Soak it in carb cleaner, spray through all the circuits and take the pilot and main jets out and clean them.

yes, carb cleaner should step you in the right direction, you spray it directly at the intake carb while it is idling,i would check for a too lean pilot jet,is that the stock 34mm carb?
check for a fuel screw setting also,be sure boot carb isn't in bad shape.

I would have to agree w/ "'95sport400". The machine does not run at all and it ran perfectly prior to just quiting. I am going to disassemble carb, soak, dry, blow w/ air pressure and try again. Thanks for all the input... I'll let y'al know if that works.
