Newbie Questions
#1
Hello Everyone. Basically the purpose of this post is to hopefully get some answers to some of my questions and concerns about my 2000 Scrambler 500 4x4. So Hopefully some of you out there can help me.
Questions
1. Is the transmission supposed to whine? When you listen to the machine being ridden, you hear the whine of the transmisstion side by side with the engine roar.
2. My two front struts are a little different. It seems that my right strut has some reinforcement on the casting just under the spring facing under the tirewell. But on the left one, there is no such reinforcement. Are your guys struts identical, or did I get the combo of an older strut with updated one. Or is there some engineerical reason why this is like this.
3. Where is the best place to attach a tow rope ( I am assuming the black bar behind the seat ) but can anyone give me an idea of how much force I can put on the belt trying to pull somthing or someone???
4.My two rear tires slowly lose pressure everyday. I try to keep about 3.5 psi in them. Could I have a slow leak in both already???
I have had the machine for about 20 days now, and I love it. If you guys have any tips or suggestions about anything, let me know. Thanks for you help, and see you in the forum....Neil

As for the rear tire pressure, I have the same problem. I installed bearclaws and they do not seem to keep there air for more than a week...maybe the rims???
As for towing, I tied it to that same exact spot and tried pulling my Xplorer out of the mud...wrong move beacause the belt started to smoke. It's strange because my Scram has a lot of torque now... I am not sure of the 500 though. It is supposed to have more in stock form. All I do know is that I no longer tow anybody out. To scared to mess up my belt again. As long as the wheels are turning you are ok. When they stop moving and your still on the gas then your burnin' the belt.
I will go out to the garage and check my struts.
Later.

The tire leaking problem is typical. On my Magnum, the tire had a slow leak around the rim when I got it. I put some tire sealant from the auto store in it and it has not leaked a bit since. I think that the ATV tires have trouble forming a good solid bead to the rim with the low air pressures in them. Tire sealant or tire slime will solve this problem and won't costs much.

Other than that how do you like the SC500?
As for the tranny whining mine is loud but not sure if it whines. You should check the fluid. Uses SAE 10-30 I believe.
I will look at my struts tonite.
If you are going to tow I would buy the trailer hitch attachment. It hooks to the rear axle at the carrier and doesn't look like it will get hung up. The only thing I've towed is my son on a Sport 400 and it towed fine. If you are gonna pull someone out of the mud I would hook to the front and pull in reverse. Just seems to pull better.
If you have even the slightest dent in a rim they leak. I have tried a couple of sealants and they dont work all that well. Keep in mind when you go to change tires all that sealant is built up inside the rim. I suggest breaking the bead and using bead sealer. Than over inflate the tire to say 15 lbs and leave it overnite.

Dont hook up to the grab bar when towing, it only pulls the back of your quad down, loosing a lot of needed power and torque. Buy the tow hitch piece and use that. Also, don't use regular automotive oil in your quad. Use Honda oil or Yamalube, they dont have the scrubbers in them that will harm your quad motor. My buddies Scrambler has one tie rod going beneath the steering post ends, and one sits between them.

Thanks Guys.....the info helped alot. I will check my rims for dents, and if they seem fine, I will try some sealants. When I bring the quad in for its 20 hr break in oil change, I will ask the dealer about the tranny and struts, and I will let you guys know. As, for "How do I Like the Quad so Far"....its awsome. Couldnt be any better. The only mistake I made was letting my father ride it!!! Now I cant keep him off it!!!!! Its a great machine. Seems tough, and I have no regrets paying the 6 grand!!! Neil
