Default 96 Sportsman Starts->stalls

Hi all, newbie to the board. Im not an atv rider (still use 2 wheels) but everybody I know rides quads..and 98% of them are SP 500 and 1 700...I guess it wont be long till I take the plunge. Anyway on the 96 sp if we start it with the button it stays running while the button is depressed once you let it go it dies. There is a catch....if you start it with the rope it runs fine...somthing kills it when using the button..I think there must be a sensor/relay or somthing telling the bike its not running and shuts it down?? Any ideas? thanx. mike

Wow sound strange but maybe you need to check your wires and make sure that none of you wires are cliped or maybe shorted. Good luck....

Welcome to the forum!

The '96 Sportsman's wiring system is pretty straight forward compared to the later models. All the starter button is doing is supplying 12vdc to the starter solenoid - there is nothing in between (no relays etc.). The starter button gets its power from the ignition switch through the stop/run switch.
