Default Recurring hub problem - 2000 500 Scrambler

Hi everyone,

I have had my front right hub engaging at low speeds for not reason. Orginally I had drained, cleaned and replaced the hub fluid (did this in the winter). This seemed to solve the issue for the time being only to return shortly after. I changed the hub fluid about a week ago as the problem had come back, this again stopped the issue temporarly. I didn't notice any hub fluid on the rim either so I don't believe it is leaking. I have a service manual and intend to disassemble the hub tomorrow. What should I be looking for? What typically causes, this issue? (The hub engages randomly in 2x4 and 4x4 modes. Is this problem common to all polaris machines?

When I orginally experienced the problem I noticed that the fluid was gritty, and when I would rub a rag on the inside of the hub I noticed a rust colour (probably rust).

Hopefully I have provided everyone with enough information.

Thanks alot everyone, you have always given me great advice.

Jim.

If all the components look good in there, then the spring that wraps around the rollers and the cam is probably too weak. So, I would replace that spring, if everything else looks good.

Another item to look at is the armature plate. If it is bent even the slightest, it can cause the hub to engage/disengage. Also, make sure your hub nut is torqued properly

When I lifted up the atv and spun the wheel I could hear a click click sound. Have you experienced this before?

Thanks.

I removed the brake caliper and the clicking stopped. I noticed one of the brake shoes moving up slightly when the click would occure. I imagine adjusting the brake shoes would solve this problem. Let's hope it's the solution to my right wheel pulling.

I finally got a chance to take my hub apart. I am currently looking at the armature plate, it is black in colour except for 2 rings on the smooth side. The black was rubbed off in those two spots. Could this be part of my problem?

I can take pictures of components if you would like.

Thanks again.

Jim.

That is normal wear. The tolerance for that plate is very little. If you are concerned, you may just want to get a new one anyway. They arent that expensive
