I bought my 8 yr old son a Kawasaki Bayou 220. He has handled this extremely well. We went to Marionville and rode 75 miles. I like the Bayou because: 1. Shaft drive 2. Independent suspension 3. Easy to get into reverse 4. 4-stroke and he can put around the yard if he wants too. 5. Most importantly...he won't outgrow this.
I took alot of criticism from dealers and others who stated this is too much machine for an 8 yr old. However, we ride together so I teach him the proper techniques.
In addition, he is responsible and drives our farm machinery.
If you think this boy is responsible, then NO PROBLEM!! Otherwise you'll be looking next yr for a bigger ride.

yea the buyou sounds good when i was first riding at 10 years old i was riding a honda 300 4x4 now i ride a sp500 and i am 13 years old...

to be honest with you a kid can handle a large CC'ed machine if properly trained and show them how dangerous they can be...

the 220 sounds like a good choice

Hugh, look at a 90cc quad. I know they are supposed to be for 12-16 year old but thats crazy. Think about this a full size quad weighs at least 400 pounds does your 10 year old have enough strenght to control this in a tricky situation? Problaly not. What if it flipped over on him? The kids quads weigh in the 230 pounds range.

food for thought!

I've had my Bayou flip on me before because of thick snow which caused it to slid sideways and flip because a loss of traction and then a sudden gain of traction in a turn. The atv ended up on top of me and I could push if off and I'm 14 yrs old. That's the only time that I've wrecked it and the quad and me didn't receive any kind of damage at all.(luckily), but the Bayou 220 is a great choice for a beginner ( in my oppinion.) good luck, and let us know what you decide on.

I cant tell you what the best machine would be.But my kids ride a 325 trail boss, they are 8 and 10.the only advise I can give you is dont get a real small machine because they will out grow it in no time.my kids have been riding since they were able to steer on there own.

Does it have a really narrow front end like most small machines ? The machine with the narrow front ends tend to tip alot easier. But there all good as long as there careful

We have three kids that ride. They are seven, eight and ten years old. They ride Honda 90's. The 90 has plenty of power for a kid and it seems pretty stable as they are wide and sit pretty low. They absolutley love riding them. I realize that they will only be able to ride them for a few years before they out grow them but, if you buy used you will more than likely be able to sell the machine for the same price as you paid for it and then upgrade to a bigger machine as the child grows up. Everyone will have a different opinion but the 90's work well for me. Don't forget the helment, goggles and some kind of boots.
