I'm going to get one of these quads but can't decide. I do alot of trail riding and hillclimb. Which one do u suggest and which one would win in a drag?

My scarmbler is a hill climb machine. The 400ex is faster. But i can get and 400ex off the line i have raced so far i can even get the bomber off the line.

the onlyh downfall i have seen for the scramblers is the weight. they accelerate like crazy but are a handful to throw around.

Cartman,
I agree. If you want to jump big get the 400EX. It also lifts the wheels in 4th gear if you like that sort of thing.
The auto of the Scrambler makes it an awesome hillclimber & a good racer. plus reverse....
I think for the most part the 400EX is faster but I've heard stock to stock on hard pack dirt (not sand) that it could go either way.
c-ya,

I've got a '99 400ex. I've ridden my friends Scrambler alot. We trade on the trails all the time. Hands down, the 400ex is a better machine in my eyes. The Scambler is nice for hills, just don't get it sideways. The extra weight is alittle hairy! I've ridden bikes all my life, and i was loyal till the 400ex came out. I can get the front end up in any gear, I'm 6 foot 240lbs and that thing goes where ever I point it. I can fly up hills, scream down a dirt road, and it'll carve thru a wooded trail like knife thru butter! I do not think there is a quad that is more forgiving and better handling than the 400ex. Ride em both, then make your choice. And don't just ride around a parking lot either, go to a dealer that has some space, even a little trail out back. It'll make a big difference.

I rode a lot of quads before I decided on my 99 Sport. I am a trail rider, not a motocross rider. I went for comfort and overall fit of the bike. The Sport fits me perfect. When on the EX, my knees were right up to the handlebars, and it was like I had to squat to sit on it. The Sport is heavy, but it also has 9 more ponies stock than a stock EX. I took the extra $1000 I saved, and put it towards mods, now I have almost twice the horses than an EX. I've also gone through many a mud bog that had more than one EX sitting in it, rocking sideways praying for traction and ground clearance. I laugh my butt off when my buddies have to dismount, and push thier quads backwards, when all I have to do is reach down, and pull my gearshift towards me. I've also had friends EXs batteries die, and be left without a backup starter system. Polaris definately has more creature comforts. Sure, the Honda handles top notch, but for overall fun trail machines, Polaris is a hands down winner.

My friend has a 98 sport. He has about 1200 in mods. I've got him by 20lbs and i blow his doors off! It doesn't matter if its in a drag, up a hill, on a track, or thru the woods. In a shootout between the banshee, 400ex, 300ex, and sport. the sport finished DEAD LAST. Too heavy, floor boards on a sport quad? automatic sport quad? few of the notes made to the sport. But, its a preferance, if your happy with your sport, then that's all that matters. that's why i told him to ride all quads he was considering a little more than just around a parking lot. You've got to be happy with it when your spending over 5000 dollars on a machine.

I dont know were your freind got his mods from but my sport makes 400ex's look like a joke in a drag race even when I just had a pipe I was shutin down 90% of the 400ex's I raced on the hill and now that I have done the more involved mods there just a joke and on the open desert roads it the same I jump them so hard off the start they just cant keep up and trust me there is a ton of 400ex's out here in AZ so I get to race them every weekend...the 400ex may get my sport at a mx track but here in my world of sand dunes and open desert its a "4 stroke joke to me"
