i feel the 4wd trails excellent. although theres more machine and weight to be turning around the corners... if your not used to it, it will wear you out in a big hurry.
but once your in tune with your 4x4 scrambler, you can go ANYWHERE,,,,,FAST!!!!!
oh yeah, the 500 has much more torque if you find your self in a sticky situation, plus they sound cooler!

I have a 02 400x and we just love it. We also have a 500ho Sportsman and we love it also. The 500 is more of a work motor and the 400 is more of a speed motor that you can take as far as you want to as far as mods go. The 500 Sportsman is stock and the 400 has a few mods. If you are going to mod the weeler up for more power (fun) I would get the 400 and if you are going to keep it stock the 500 would work great.

the 4wd system adds about 40 pounds, i think? when riding trails, it wont feel liek your riding a 500 pound machine, these things are quick!

The sick blatt of single cylinder 4 stroke is one of the most annoying, anemic sounds in all the internal combustion world. NOTHING beats the ringy ding ping of a snotty, piped 2-stroke. God, even those competition chain saws sound awesome.
Get the 400, you won't regret it!

It's gotta be mor than 40 lb. I wonder which is heavier, the shaft front drive system or the chain!? Mine is the 97' which is chain drive. The 98' on up are shaft in front. I would go with the 400 but that is just me...
