I have asked this in part before but still not satisfied with my results. My 04.5 500 HO makes a metallic sound like a knoching sound when I get 20 to 30 mph. When I let off the throttle going down a decline it makes the same noise but broken up with no rhythem to it. It sounds like its coming maybe from the differential, but not sure. It almost sounds like something is loose and rattling but sounds like a engine noise. I know polaris is noisey any ways, but i;m hearing something else. My dealer drained the diff. oil and said there was no metallic peices in it. It does make a louder noise now that is has been drained. They called Polaris and they said its nothing not to worry about it! They haven't heard it so how can they not to worry about it? My warranty runs out in 3 months and I'm concerned something is wrong. I don't know what to do from here. I have had it in to the dealer 2 times and they can't find anything but the noise is still there. Its more than just noisey polaris engine noise, I'm sure. I wish there were someone who lived close to Paoli that has a 500 so we could compare. Could someone take their 500 and ride on pavement around 20 to 30 mph and see if they have any unusual noises? Mine makes that noise sometimes on the street, but not in the dirt. Not sure what it is and don't hear it that often at all. I'd like to know as well. It sorta sounds like a metal clanking noise on mine. Now that I think about it, it could be the chain. I'll have to experiment a bit more when I find time.

 

Polaris motors make all kinds of odd sounds, my Scrambler would make all kinds of noise(same engine thats in your SP). I have never heard a "quiet" polaris engine, i must say my preddy is way quieter then my scrambler was...

Its nothing to worry about, they all do this...

I think i know what noise you are talking about. On the sportsman that would be the sound of the hubs and differentials engaging and disengaging as you let on and off the throttle. On lower speeds you can hear it, I have called tech for polaris and talked to them about it because it does not make someone very satisfied about there product, however they said what it was and explained it all to me and it is normal. So i would not be worried.
