1995 400L Gearcase
#1
My chain broke and slammed into the gear case housing (right side). Cracked it badly. Several questions. First, any pointers on how to remove the gear case. Secondly, can the housing be repaired? Finally, does anyone know how I can get one inexpensively? Thanks. Can also e-mail me at shoehare@yahoo.com.

First thing you need to do is buy a service manual. These gearcases arent hard to get out just takes some time. You are looking at $300 and some change for new parts(just did this on our TB) But you can check on Ebay for parts and maybe get lucky.

ftwflh is right - a service manual goes a long way in help, especially when you are getting into the tranny.
It is possible that the case half can be repaired - take the tranny apart and carry the busted part to a reputable welder who can weld aluminum - they should be able to tell you if the extent of damage is repairable or not. Don't accept a maybe - if they can't be positive about their work, then replace the case half with a new one.
