How to take apart rear caliper on Trailboss
#1
The dealer says there must be dirt in the rear caliper on my 2000 Trailboss. I'm eating a set of brake pads every 100 miles or less. The manual says there is no adjustment on my caliper, but there is a hex head on the back. Does that open up the caliper? Can I just take it apart and check out (clean up) the pistons ?? Will I be able to put her back together again with out new parts?
Anyone who might know how... I'd REALLY appreciate some help. I thought I'd spend all next weekend riding, instead of working on the ATV.....

if you just want to clean the caliper it is easy, just remove the 2 mounting bolts and it comes right off, then remove the pin from brakes, compress the pistons into the caliper body( remove the top from brake fliud reserve) then the pads come right out. My sc500 does accumulate dirt and mud in the spaces around the pads, I clean them regulary but it still uses pads quick. the allen screw holds th two caliper halves togather if you want to remove the pistons and and inspect the bore, but the caliper seams to be all self contained and sealed and shouldn't get mud in it.

The dealer said there could be dirt around the pistons, so they aren't retracting as they should. I don't know what else to try so I'll do it. I read in some earlier posts that you can use some kind of compound to 'glue' (some kind of pipe compound that is removable) the pads to the pistons so they retract all the way, anyone do this?
