Hey Chickenman, I plan to get into sledding this winter, around here (northern Utah) everybody rides RMK's it seems. My question for you is do you think I would need an RMK or one of the XCR's? I know nothing about the subject, also do you know of any good snowmobile forums?

Thanks, Matt

MAY
It really depends on what you want to do.I think back to first salesman asking me that Hell I had no Idea.If you are going to ride the powder and hill climb and highmark yes the RMK if your only trail rideing then the XCR.Myself I'm into powder and boondocking and highmarking.I guess you could say they are like QUADS RMK being the 4x4 of snowmobiles. If you could get someone to take you a couple of times you'd see what you want to do,then invest in sled. With RMK you have long track at least 136inch and deeper 1 3/4 to 2inch lugs, with trail machine you have shorter track 120 up to 136 but with shorter lugs say 1 1/4inch.But with trail sled if you get off trail your stuck,Powder machine you can still have both worlds but the handling on trails isn't the best.SKI-DOO has the Summitt and CAT has POWDER EXTREME,YAMAHA has MTN MAX,all good MTN machines, all the magazines will have them in catagories like that,Mtn/TRAIL/touring and so forth.I would say stay with the 600-700 range what ever you buy.Twin will have alot of bottom torque and tripple will have upper end power.Tri-city polaris Salt Lake is good place to trade with or order parts, very good guys and know thier stuff.CM
As far as sites I like SLED CITY and AMERICAN SNOWMOBILER.If you think things get rough here wait till you see snowmobile sites,it's like sunday school in here.Pick-up a few snowmobile magazines, and talk to alot of people.I bought old SKI-DOO real cheap just to find out if I'd like it rode it once and was hooked.I looked around and saw more POLARIS than any thing else so thats the way I went and have been real happy with them.

Cobb-I liked SledCity, too. I have no idea what they were talking about most of the time, but I did enjoy the exchange you clued me in on? Remeber that? I even printed that out for later entertainment.
When you were discussing the top speed runs, I noticed you conveniently left out the special additive--the PJ. Enough of that and you can really GO.
PS-I am getting your Moab tape ready.

Thanks Chickenman you gave me some things to think about and I appreciate your time. It sounds like the RMK is for me, I won't even look at another brand because I love my Polaris quads and have a good repoir(s/p) with my dealership plus it's only a couple of miles away. You mentioned not to go over 700cc, why? I was kinda looking at the RMK 800 with the 151" track thinking that is will be the ticket. I weigh 240#'s so I figured the bigger the engine the better, plus I love HP. Do you know what the approx. top speed and HP rating is for this sled? I wish I knew somebody around here that had sleds but ...oh well guess I will have to research some more then spend 8K to find out what I like. The name of my dealer is "Big Boys Toys" my wife sure thinks it's an appropriate name Man I love toys

MAYHEM
WOOOO DOOOOGIE!!!! your the man You are going to the top first thing.I guess I really didn't think you were talking new. That 800 is one fine machine and it'll take you when no man should be.LOL I'll be rideing one of them this fall,I'll have mine piped and roller clutch and heads.I have the "V" force reeds in the 700 they help some but not sure they are worth the $250.00.Iwas thinking they are in the 140horse range. Before I forget it try to find club you can join and then you'll find rideing partners.Don't be afraid to ask questions as most snowmobile guys are more than happy to share ideas with you. Also one of the first things to buy is a good folding shovel,I don't mean them army type get good snowmobile shovel. It'll fit under hood or can hook to back rack some how.If you get stuck,no I mean when you get stuck you have better chance to dig out.As far as clothes don't skimp on them good coat and bibs comfortable helmet with heated or double lens.Gloves aren't all that critical as you'll have heated grips.I carry extra pair that are heaveier than the rideing ones that way if I'm away from sled have dry warm gloves.

CM,

I was told that Polaris is the most popular brand on the snow, followed by Ski-Doo, then Artic Cat & in last place was Yamaha. Do you have to rejet your carbs often when riding at different altitudes?

Do you run regular unleaded gas or premium in your sled?

thanks

Shark
I would say that is right Polaris definately is #1,they each have thier strong places. As I say CAT rules the hillclimbs in the smaller classes then POLARIS in the big bore and DOO was 3rd with Yamaha making poor showing.Ski-Doo was the leading force in MTN machines, with the SUMMIT in 95 I think. Then in 97 Polaris came out with the twin 700 and then 600 and now 800.
I jet mine for 8-10,000 ft thats where I ride mostly if we go higher or lower no big deal,we are in the ball park.It has really been neat being in the middle of things since they began the real changes to MTN sleds since 95.There have been so many changes.Alot of the things that were after market are now standard equiptment, such as handle bar turn downs and mtn bar and cargo rack. The tracks have come from 133 inches now they are up to and including 156inch.We are going places now and doing things that we never dreamed of a few years ago.Sorry about being so long winded but like the mobiles as much as Quads.
