I think I did one one time and marked it with a marker (think on my 4by) and just put it back where it was. Prob not a good idea. But I since, made a socket out of a pice of pump pipe. Just cut the pattern from the spanner nut with a grinder and welded a nut on the end of it.

Pounding the slotted nut on the crank with a punch and chisel is not the right way to do it ---- HOWEVER ---- I have never seen any problems by folks that have done it .
If you have to do it that way use a dab of loctite , and do it sober ~~~~~~~
Polaris has a part number for the tool , I used to stock it . What does the correct tool cost ?
Remember it has left hand threads .
Ced is correct , you can make a tool to do it too. It could be done with as few tools as a grinder and a welder . I bought a Polaris socket myself , but I have many many tools I have fabricated myself in the shop .
TOOL MAKING --> separates us from the monkeys !
