Default 2003 scrammy charging problem

Ok, so I went riding yesterday and about an hour and a half in we staopped for a break. 15 minutes later when we get ready to go, I have a dead battery! Thank goodness for pull starts. I used the pull start for the rest of the day. When I got home, I charged the battery and it started right up, put a multimeter on the battery and the system isn't charging. The manual is kind of a tough read with about 5 tests they want you to do. Anyone have some experience with a non charging system that could tell me in english what I might want to check first. Could the voltage regulater be bad already or maybe a certain wire has come apart or undone? Can a bad battery keep the system from charging properly. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. I'd like to figure this out before Rumble on the ridge this month. Thanks a bunch!

99 times out of 100 it's the regulator! Test the stator coils for resistance and compare them to you books specs, it will also give you the wire colors, if those are ok and there is no power out at the regulator than that is your problem. I've work on 4 different ones with charging problems and they are turned out to be regulators!

Hmmm, now that I think of it. I was changinging my spark plug yesterday and was accidently tugging a bunch of stuff up front. I may have pulled a wire out of the regulator. It is up front by the radiator correct? I changed that sucker with out taking any of the plastic off so it was a tight a$$ squeez. That may be just what happened. Thanks for the reply!!!!!! I forgot that stinking thing was up front!

Well, I replaced the voltage regulator last night and it was not the problem. I am still not getting an increase in voltage at the battery when I rev the motor at all. I am a little new at servicing an atv motor so I'm trying to learn my way around it. The service tech said the stater probably blew so I am going to take it in and have that replaced.
