I have a 2004 which I ride and my wife has a 2003. They are great little quads. I ordered the stock Polaris speedo kit for it, and would highly recommend one although they are pricey. I also got the K&N and outerwear for both bikes. You could see a little differnce in performance but not significant. I have played with different jetting scenarios and found that the .130 worked the best in mine where as my wifes a .127 works the best. I then put 24" Mudlites on it and went up 2 teeth on the rear sprocket. The low end response is incredible now, and with the bigger tires I didn't loose any top end. I have thought of maybe an aftermarket exhaust, as I know that it would help a lot. I also changed the primary clutch spring to a green. I like it but most people I ride with don't because it takes so many RPM's to engage.
The best advice I can give is do your scheduled maintenance, and it will do you no wrong.

HI . I have a 2003 trail boss and I am sure you will enjoy your new wheeler. The best thing I have got for my Boss is the service manual. I am not mechanical inclined but have found that the service manual makes most of the maintence and upkeep a breeze. I upgraded my chain to a did X ring. As long as you keep the chain well maintained you should have no real problems with this wheeler.

Dan, I'll go along with most everything Speedy & Pinkmoon said. After trying first the white, then the green primary clutch springs I've gone back to the white. Clutching mods depend on individual riding habits/style. Better flow on both the intake & exhaust is a good starting point for more 'oomph'. Any good aftermarket hi-flow air filter combined with a performance exhaust should make a difference you can feel, at the expense of more noise. Carb jetting must be adjusted to suit a new filter & pipe. Most aftermarket exhausts have fiberglass packing that will eventually burn out making the machine louder unless the packing is replaced. I chose a slip-on exhaust made of stainless that has no packing to be replaced, but it IS a bit louder than I would prefer. Some riding areas require spark arrestors & have max sound level rules to consider when comparing/shopping for exhaust. Some aftermarket exhausts are tuneable for power/noise. How quiet to you need to stay, or, how loud can you be without drawing UNWANTED attention ? Useful info & help is as close as this forum! Good luck with your new ride

Hey Craneman, What difference did the white spring make? I have also tried the Dalton black 7 white and wasn't really thrilled by it. I may try a few more small mods but this is eventually going to be my wifes bike and hers a spare, and I am probably getting a new 800 EFI. Thanks for any ifo that you can shed on the springs.

Speedy, I don't remember the rpm figures, but the engagement point on the white spring falls between the blue(stock) and the green polaris springs. The green was a bit harder hit than I wanted, being an old coot that rides some fairly tight, technical trails. There are clutching 'gurus' on this forum that are MUCH more informed & experienced than me, but I believe I remember that the white spring is/was stock on Polaris's 2-strokes so it has slightly higher engagement than the stock 4-stroke(blue) spring.
