Default what does the H.O. mean in the 05 Sportsman 500?

ya ya see im stuck between sport or ute. i think a sport could handle what i drive through but my neighbors got a sportsman 600twin and id like to go places he can go. im stuck between the Vinson 500 and the sportsman 500H.O. and either the 400ex or the Z-400 casue i have enough to buy one of each. so i like the vinny better but do you think it could keep up on the trails and stuff with the 600twin??

Elkbow, you are correct. The non-HO SP500 has more low-end power as it has a smaller carb. I'm guessing that because smaller carbs usually make better torque. The HO has more top-end power as it has a bigger carb(40mm mikuni vs 36mm) and a more aggressive cam. I think the HO also has slightly different clutching. The HO has 20% more peak horsepower but loses some low-end torque. Test ride each one of those atvs you mentioned and pick the one best suited to your riding style. What may work for me, may not work for you and vice versa. Good luck with your decision, fastestblaster.

Yup, exactly my though, always pick the one that works best for your needs. Two weeks ago I picked up a new '05 700 EFI. More than suites my needs. Awesome machine, put about 200 miles on it in the first week up elk hunting. Just used it to get to and from my hunt locations, driving the dirt roads.

Plenty of torque on the 700 EFI.... Also looking at the Ranger, would be fun during the Winter with a full covering to keep alittle warmer....

Polaris came out with the H.O. 500 in 1998 in the scrammy to boost it up to the 400 2 strokes power, then went & put
it in the sportman 500 to boost it up too. I love mine, they seem to be a solid motor.

Totally different motor in the 98 scrammy vs. the 2001 first year 500 HO Sportsman....
