I'm speaking of the primary clutch, I am looking at two different springs that are identical except one has a 87 2-1/4 load and one has a 91 2-1/4 load. what would be the benefits/tradeoff of this? I've never heard it mentioned before.

2.25 is where the spring is for length in neutral or disengaged so with that said the one that is 91 # will engage a little higher then the one with 87# does that make sense

I was under the impression that the engagement was controled by 2.5? thats the first number usually listed. If what you say is right then neither spring will work..........ok now you have me worried, I could have swarn the spring rate at 2.5 contoled engagement rpm.

First number designates engagement and second number is shift out.

Shift RPM or "shift out speed" is the rpms where the weight force overcomes the spring pressure and starts moving the primary together. The reason they have to specify them at certain installed heights is because the weight of the weights (how many grams), the tension of the secondary, and clutch alignment can also affect when the shift occurs.
