Default polaris 600 question

Hello everyone,
I just bought a 2004 600 Sportsman the other day, Ive never owned a Polaris ATV.
I was wondering if maybe a few of you could tell me if this is normal.
While accelerating, I can hear one small clink coming from the transmission area. Just a normal shifting noise, not a big deal.....sound normal.

However if Im going down a somewhat rocky hill and using brakes and then accelerating and de-accelerating, it seems like there is accesive clicking and clanking.

It also makes a engine brake squeal, but if i give it throttle the squeal goes away.

The part that bothers me the most is the clicking, its as if it has a bad u-joint, but thats not the peoblem its just what is sounds like.

My friend had a 2003 500 sportsman and no noises.

I did take it to my dealer and he said that it is normal for the 600 's and the 700's to make a little noise.

He said the engine brake squeal would probably go away as i break it in.

Does anyone else have the same noises etc, and is it normal.

Thanks for any replies in advance.

yes, your dealer is right....the most annoying thing on my new '05 700 EFI is the clunking noise coming downhill and going over rocks, etc., its normal.

don't have any squealing noise though, but the dealer is probably right that this will go away.....

Most what you hear is normal, my 500 didn't have the noise as much as the 700, but I can live with it....

Welcome to the forums.

normal is what I was told too by my dealer but seems like polaris could do something about the noise. my wife and I just bought two 700 EFI's and it pissed us both off to hear the noise the clutch makes when getting on and off the throttle. I don't know if a clutch kit would help any of the noise but I've heard it helps performance so if it would help the clutch noise it would make it a great upgrade I suppose.

Polaris went to a different secondary or driven clutch on the late 04 Sportsman models. Not sure why, but they do make a clink sound when the driven clutch engages and disengages, if you take your pvt cover off you will see the secondary clutch has what looks like a bow tie on the outside sheave, i believe that thing rotates back and forth and that makes the clink or clunk.
As for the 700 EFI models they had a Team roller clutch, they are not as noisy as the 600 and 700 models, but still make some noise.

i know the squealing noise you mean. when going downhill, and u dont give it any gas, it feels like u begin coasting faster than the tranny and it begins squealing. when some gas is given, it seems to "catch up" to itself, the back tires skid for a second as the belt speeds up again, and the noise stops. Dunno if its normal but mine does it too

My 03 600 and I clink and klank down almost all hills when the EBS hits. We clunk on most accelerations from stop. I have gotten so used to it I dont even notice it any more. When the noise stops is when I will start to worry.

Thanks for all of your replies,
I feel much better now, I really like this 600.Its a real animal.
Where I ive there is allot of steep and rocky mountains that I HAVE to climb.
The 600 is an a monster, I could only imagine what a 700 EFI would do to me.
I saw your pics elkbow and that is a nice looking machine.

Once again thanks for the replies on my question, it just seemed like allot of clatter down there and just didnt seem right.

Tyler711, that is the exact noise I am talking about, if I am creeping it does'nt do it, but if I am going fast and let off it squeals.

It didnt seem as bad yesterday, it was raining so maybe the moisture helped a little.

This is a great forum, I will check in here more often.

Thanks to all.

Layne

the squealing doesnt bother me except that u cant "coast" freely until that noise starts, and when the engine "locks" back in the tires stop for a second, just makes it scary when u barely have traction sometimes
