I thought it was decent of the State to do that to make sure it was sold legally and stuff like that, plus i can get ahold of the new owners see how the atv is running.

Does Maine require that ATV's be titled? Ohio just instituted a law last June that all ATV's had to be titled when renewing registration or being sold. This is suppose to help cut down on some of the theft as the title will now need to be transferred to the new owner. Kind of a pain though, My 98 had no title and I had to drag it to the BMV to get a vin inspection done, but if it helps it get recovered after getting stolen, all the better. In the case of a trade in, you would have to transfer title to them and they would transfer title to the new owner. You would never know the name of the new owner.

 

no title up here, as of yet. If i wanted to sell my SP i would just right out a bill of sales with the vin number on it and that is all they would need to get it register and insured if they wanted some or it was required becuase they financed it.

The only bad thing about Ohio's title law is that not everyone knows it exist. My buddy bought an old three wheeler and the owner didn't know about the title law. My buddy had to get the seller to go and title the machine and transfer it to him before he could register it.

 

From a police officer stand point this is a good thing for cutting down on theft...but on the other hand this is just another way of big brother getting his hands in your pocket to pay tax on the the atv.

 

Sounds like a good idea except in NY state, Where all the people I talked to do not register their ATV's because the state takes (steels)all the registration money and puts it in the general fund.Not an ATV fund tohelp maintain trails, In NY you pay a $20 registration for absolutly nothing in return.

 

Well, I am one of those Ohioans ignorant of this new law. I have bought 2 used quads in the past 6 months in Ohio and the sellers never mentioned even having titles. Does this law cover dirt bikes also? I can understand how having them titled would help in a theft situation but is there any other reason for having them registered in my name?

 

This is a little off topic but, about a month back I was "pulled over" by a state park ranger on BLM land. He checked the VIN number on the frame of my quads to make sure they weren't stolen. He didn't seem to even notice my aftermarket pipe without a spark arrestor or the fact that I only had one registration decal on my bike (instead of 2) and it was hidden up under the fender. As far as "fish cops" go he was pretty cool, I told him that I appreciated his effort because If I had my quad stolen I wouldn't want the Dink that stole it to be able to ride it around without having any fear of getting checked. I would be beyond upset if my quad was ever stolen, and if I ever found someone riding "my" Scrambler I would have to knock them down and peel out on them until my white plastic turned red.

What do you other staes have for ID on the quad? I know Wisconsin has stickers. 1 on each side. And here in Maine, we have license plate, just like the little motorcycle plates you see. Front and rear.

I will try and help you on this. I only found out about the new laws by reading a pamphlet at the BMV. Here is what the law requires:
1. Dirt bikes must be titled as well as atvs
2. In order to register your vehicles to ride on state or federal property, you will need a title.
3. If you try and sell them, the new owner will need a title from you in order for them to get it registered.
4. If you go into the title bureau and tell them that you just bought them, they will make the previous owner obtain a title and transfer it to you. Then you will pay sales tax on this price when you title it. Play stupid. Go in an tell them that you have owned them for years and don't have paperwork. They will have you sign a waiver. You will also need a VIN inspection completed.
