Finally getting to the first oil change. Book calls for the Polaris oil, 0W-40. Will I find that same weight in a Mobil 1??? If not what Mobil 1 should I use for year-round use in Northern, MI. Also what type of filters are available beside the $13.00 Polaris brand??? Thanks for the help. (I checked all the other post for this info and couldnt find it, this time I will write in down.)

Mobil 1 does not make a 0W40 oil. I am not sure which one I would use. Email Walexa, he is using Mobil 1 in his atv. As for filters. You can use the following:

Fram 6607A
Duetchs(sp?) (Available at Autozone) - D371 (Cross references to a Suburu)
Emgo - Shadetree outdoors has these for around 6.99. Call them at 1-888-Shadetree. They give discounts for large orders on filters.

Hope this helps.

If I understand right, Mobil 1 is a synthetic oil. Many people don't recommend switching to synthetic oil until after break in is complete to prevent excessive oil consumptopn. I would run the Polaris oil for at least 50 or 75 hours before I would switch just in case they were right. These were the teachers at a tech school but it was several years ago & maybe things have changed since then.

The Polaris oil is also synthetic. Mobil 1 has some of the best oil on the market, but the issue is that they do not make the 0W40. 5W30 or 10W40 could be used instead as they are closest to the factory oil. I have not switched from the Polaris oil. I run Mobil 1 synthetic in my truck. The owners manual said it would not hurt anything.

I'm sorry I didn't explain myself better. Synthetic oil is very good stuff, particularly Amsoil and Mobil 1. All I was referring to was that in tech school they discouraged its use in a brand new engine until it is broken in. If I remember right, it is because the oil is so effective, it takes a very long time to seat the oil ring. It won't hurt the engine in any way, it will just take more miles to fully break things in. Sorry for any confusion.
Does Amsoil make that weight? In my opinion is is about as good as Mobil 1.

I've been using Castrol Syntec 5w-50. Seem to be the closest to the Polaris 0w-40 oil, weight range. I've never had any problems with my Sportsman. I ride mostly during hunting season Sept.- Jan. Temprature ranges from the 90's to below 0 sometimes. I hunt in Missouri, Kentucky, Illinios, and Michigan. Great oil but ouch, the price is usually over 4 bucks a quart...at Walmart.

Farmer123,

I have heard the no synthetic thing before, here on the forum. Like the others have said, Polaris oil is synthetic, Polaris puts the 0W40 synthetic in at the factory, and they warranty the machines, so it must be A-OK!

Personally, I use the Polaris oil. I see no reason not to. Yes it is a bit expensive, but the recommended oil change interval is 100 hours. A small price to pay for the time in the saddle, and peace of mind to boot. I use half that interval and the cost still hasn't broken me.

I use the EMGO filter. It is actually the only filter my Polaris dealer sells! He claims that EMGO makes the Polaris filters. They do look identical.

I use Mobile 1, 15-50 tri-synthetic for summer in Mich, and go to 5-30 in the winter, for my Mag 500. Also, Balwin makes a quality oil filter for $6. As long as you stick to a synthetic, you won't void your warranty (so my dealer says) Hope I helped.

FZ 750:

I ran into the same problem when looking for a 0W-40 weight oil here in Canada. I have been using the Mobile 1 for the last while. Last month I discovered Wal Mart sells an 0W-40 fully synthetic oil with their own logo. I was weary of a "Wal Mart" brand at first but some oil company had to make it, the same for the Polaris brand oil. I have given it try and with almost 100 miles so far I cannot find a fault. Hope this helps.
