NewBie Scrambler Question......
#1
Newbie to the site and to the Scrambler. Just bought a 1997 500 4x4 Scrambler... I know it's not 98 or newer for the HO and I have read a lot of posts on this site. However I couldn't pass up the deal. This thing is like brand new , original tires w/95% tread yet. the running boards don't have any paint worn off. The guys said it may have about 3-5 tanks of gas through it. No scuffs on tires no chips on the rims, etc.... On a scale of 1-10 I would give it 9.5.
I plan on using it for an all around atv (utility/sport/hunting)
Anyway here is my question which I read about on the site is the side clutch cover Issue. What cover do I replace it with or is there a better fix? The noise happens at low idle only. I have heard to replace it with a 01 or newer cover. What model will work? Also I have heard that guys shim these also is that correct. Also the mention swiching belts with different models?
Any other know problems with this year / model? I did also read about the chain issues and maintenance upkeep....is it really that bad.

Welcome.
The covers should all be interchangable the newer ones are larger with more clearance. You dont shim the cover, I belive thats in referance to the clutch sheave for alignment.
The belts are either for ebs or non ebs machines.
I chain tensioner helps and dont jump too high without one. Keep it lubed.

The 03 and newer covers have the drain plug. You need to see if the inner cover is warped too. It may also need to be replaced which means you will have to pull the clutches. But, the outer cover will still bolt onto the old inner cover. I believe that there is a few extra bolt holes though. All the covers are the same from model to model. For the tensionor, you need one for a NON-CONCENTRIC machine. You can get it from HPD
