I've got a '00 Mag 500 with about 475 miles on it, been a great machine thus far!! However in the past 70 miles it's lost about 1/4' in the resouvor.
The $500 question is ...How many of you have a simular problem and what has been the cause?? How much do you loose etc. etc.....

thanks Jim

1/4' or 1/4"? 1/4' would be 3 inches. If only 1/4", that would be normal. Even 3 inches would be normal for a new machine. The coolant loss should stop once all air is bled from the system. Be sure to use only Polaris antifreeze or Honda antifreeze. Some automotive antifreezes contain silicates and phosphates, which will cause the mechanical seal to fail.

its supposed to be a closed system..as stated above once the air has been bled out of it there should be no loss,it may fluctuate with the ambient temps..i would look closely at the water pump seal as i have heard people saying debris etc. can get into the coolant reservoir and may contaminate the seal..i extended that line up just above the fuel tank along with all the other vents to prevent this

Walexa is right on,I had a similar problem and he gave me good advice regarding type of coolant, and to check my pump seal. I had approx 70 miles on my 500 sp when I started to notice coolant loss. Could not find external leaks or internal leakage. Past weekend put on 100 miles and no coolant loss. I think I still had air in the system, but all is well now.

On both of our SP500's the coolant level in the resevoir dropped almost to the bottom within the first 50 miles as the air in the system worked it's way out. Topped them both off then and haven't touched them since. Level has stayed within the marks on the resevoir.

Just to be sure your seal is not going, run the bike real hard for 30 minuts to get it good and hot, the put your finger below the weep hole and check for moisture. These seal give you a little notice, just like on a car.
