Default Chain queery

I put on a chain a couple weeks back. I find that it is really lose when its in neutral and reverse, but when I have it in high or low forward, it tightens up ALOT! Is this supposed to be so? Like I said when i have it in drive, it is so tight, I can move it maybe 1/4 of a inch. I find that it is probably too tight.

Also how long should I take it easy with the new chain? Is there any break in period?

Of course it is tighter when in gear. The engine is going to apply torque to it. That is normal.

I try to keep about 1/4 to 1/2 of play on mine.

in forward the top of the chain will be tight,,,bottom loose

the opposite in reverse

depending on what bike you have,,,,,you could check the swingarm to be sure there is no movement,,,,which will affect your chain tension as well
