Default Better Support Your Trail Mod!

Well after one ride this weekend my 400 trail mod grenaded on me. Broke both case halves and the cylinder. I'm going to support both the case and cylinder upon getting it fixed. I would recommend to anyone that has one or is interested in getting a Trail Mod to do so as well. It's going to be a very expensive repair and could have been avoided if I'd girdled the cylinder and reinforced the case. Way less expensive. I thought this only applied to Race Mods but it happened to me and it may happen to you so just a word of caution. I don't mean to scare anyone just trying to prevent this from happening to anyone else. Some good news is Rick thinks he can weld the cylinder to stronger than new so I won't have to buy another cylinder and then have to pay to get it ported.

I've got pics in the gallery that will be up when the moderators approve.

Yeah you know that must be a really weak spot on these motors. Rick said that he's seeing more and more of this. I hope to get it going around mid January. I'm gonna buy the cases from Polarisfreak and send it to Rick to weld the supports in. My goal is to make it bullet proof. I hope!

Shawn I'm sorry to hear that. You have always been a big help to me and everyone else on here. Hope you get her back together and be out blasting before you know it. If you ask real nice maybe your wife will let you ride her scrammy once or twice a week until you get yours back together.

Wow! Grenade? Thats an understatement. Did it sound bad when it let go, or did it just quit?
So do you think the case saver from hpd keep this from happening? I sure hope so. By the looks of that pic, a person mite wanna put a strap on both cases (left and right)
Hey beltdrive, is that an aaen girdle you have? What did you do to the fins on the cylinder? Looks like you just cut them out?

Out of curiosity what are your riding habits like. Dennis of AZ Bad Boyz told me not to land from a jump on the gas or it could break the cyl. He also said even if you do alot of whoop riding at full throttle it could do this also. But I dont remember him saying it could rip the whole engine appart like in your pictures. I'm sorry for your misfortune.

Yeah, I better be real nice. . I hope I can get it soon too.

No I didn't hear any loud noise or anything it just sounded kinda like when you kill power with the throttle pinned and how it kinda winds down real slow. It started again after that and then it just kinda popped. I thought it was the spark plug boot cause when I looked down it was off. I put it back on and it sounded real fast turning over like there wasn't any compression. I then took off the seat to inspect things a little closer and that's when I saw the cracked cases. I also thought about doing both sides of the cases but can't see any room on the left side to put them. I'm gonna use the case saver from HPD.

Well EAB it's funny you ask that cause I had just come off a sidehill jaunt doing a wheelie and the bottom was kinda steep and was kind of a jarring hit but have done this many times. It was shortly there after that it went. Rick also said it could have had a hairline crack or could have been going for some time and it just finally blew. I couldn't believe my luck. I didn't see the cylinder until the end of the day and thougth man this just went from bad to worse.

My Gosh Shawn!! That's worse then when the alky bike came apart. I have to agree with Rick, it must have had a hairline crack that finally gave way. Can Rick do anything with the jug considering it got broke into the transfer tunnel?
