04 Sportsman 600 hesitates, backfires
#21
Well jeffro, once it warms up there is very little to no hesitation at all now that it was 20 degrees or better today. I tried holding 1/4 throttle for a stretch and it was steady. It starts great with only one thump of the motor and idles well also with a little choke, so I have narrowed my small problem down to acceleration just off idle and it is only a little burp and seems to get better as the temps get higher. The jetting is the stock setting so maybe these things really need to be re-jetted for winter temps to run smoothly.

yea, jetting will really help, especially in the colder temps. i don't know about your area, but here some of the fuels can be a problem in winter also. i try to jet bikes for best all around performance for the riding style, if most of the riding is warm or hot weather - jet for that, if the bike is only used in cold weather say hunting and snow plowing or winter fun (yes i have a few guys that only ride in winter) then jet for that use. usually you can get it pretty close for the "best" of both, but when those temps really drop you may see some changes in running because the cold air leans them out. hope any of this helps, let me know.

thanks man, I'm looking forward to this week end when the forecast predicts temps up to 30 degrees, then I'll be able to get a better idea of how it should run. The past few days I've been up in the woods gathering fire wood with my 7 year old; the 6 year can't be bothered with that kind of manual labor, Mom did however manage to drag him to the barn for chores. My 600 has been awesome up there pulling a 5'x7' trailer made from a pop-up camper frame and pulling out trees to be cut up. My Uncle-in-law has given me permission to cut the dead or dying trees which helps us both out as he wants to open it up over there. It's work like this where the Sportsman really shines, especially a twin with all that torque and traction promoting curb weight. what a workhorse!

Talked to my dealer today, He didn't know anything about the update but looked it up for me. I asume its the "start up and drive away" update. Anyway he said to bring it in and they would check it out and do the update.
Thanks guys, Jeff

I have had the 600 twin for a couple of years.
Right out of the gate it had the hesitation/backfiring issue. I had a dealer remove the plug to get to the mixing screw for adjustment. It helped but still takes forever to get it running smooth. Although it starts every- single- time painlessly, warm or cold...you will never hop on and drive away smoothly like other ATV's. It backfires and cuts out. This has been a serious dissappointment for the machine that runs like a top once "Hot" in warm or cold weather.
I think I need to try the pilot jet from a 700 next.
