Default 800efi problems

I posted a message yesterday about "dead 800efi" the machine gets full power to lights winch no problem. But with the key in the start position totally dead. I only hear a slight tick noise coming from the starter area. Tonight I noticed on my 700efi the winch operates without or with the key. The way the 800 winch operates , is only with the key on. Im wondering if there is somekind of wiring problem with the winch on the 800. Even though its going back to the dealer. Does anybody have any suggestions... Thanks

Sounds like a weak battery to me. Do you have a digital meter to test the battery voltage? A weak battery will run lights, etc. but won't have the Amperage to turn the starter. It will engage the solenoid (clicking sound), but won't have the power to turn over the motor.

have you been out in the snow lately? or very cold temps?

i had the same problem on my scrammy 500 and thought it was the battery. after wasting 50 bucks for a new battery and installing it, i still had the same problem. the solenoid would just click.

so on a hunch, i took a hair dryer and thawed out the snow packed solenoid. after a minute of thawing, it worked just fine. i still dont really know the actual cause of the problem, im pretty sure that it was frozen, or the snow was grounding out something. but its been fine ever since.

just some ideas,

X

Its been mild here (until tonight and tomorrow below zero) The machine is awesome. But this past weekend when I shut it off miles out in the woods, by myself it wouldnt turn over.

you can check the battery condition and other electrical components in the service mode on the speedo pod, your owner's manual will show you how to get into it...good luck.

fwd1122- Quote "Tonight I noticed on my 700efi the winch operates without or with the key."

your 700 is wired incorrectly. the winch should only work when the key is ON. i never had a winch on any of my ATVs work when the key was in the OFF position. that's bad news.

more than likely your 800 needs a starter.

keep us posted.....

thanks for all the helpful advice. dealer says bad solenoid. thested it with a meter and showed it open. also I asked him to jump the solenoid and it turned over. I am just wondering if something else, like the statrer caused the solenoid to fry. the tech says he never sees this solenoid problem in newer sportsmans. I guess I will have no confidence riding alone, and shutting it off. Despite this minor problem.......800efi is awesome. Lots of low end, smooth, and cannot even feel the weight. I also have a 2004 700 efi. Another awesome machine. I use it for utility, including plowing a 300 ft driveway. Tried the Brute. Polaris is the way to go.

there is some system thing that you can do by pressing a few combinations of buttons to bring stuff like that up.
