Default Performance Differences Between 2005 Sportsman 400 and 500?

oldsmobile Quote- "Has anyone ridden both? I am just curious how much of a difference there is between the two? Will it only be top speed or will one or the other perform better in rough terrain like hill climbing?"

if you like hill climbing remember you have to come back down! i sure do like EBS. my Magnum425 didn't have it and my SP500 does and it makes a BIG difference imo. after awhile i would get tired of reaming on that brake lever. it just got old and the hand sore. EBS is a big deal for me.

i would think the 425 in my Magnum is the same as in the Sportsman400. powerwise i think they both crank! the 500 will muster-up A LITTLE more. but the 400 is no sloucher.

later,
-MT

Thanks for the input. I am having the EBS installed on my wife's 400. I will probably end up getting the 400 instead of the 500. We have some friends that we will ride with and they have 500s. If the 400 will go every where they go, that's good by me.
This is my first quad too.

You should have no problem keeping up on the technical stuff, just only in the wide open where they might get a little distance between you. But for a first quad, you can't go wrong with the 400. Good luck with your purchase!

400 is right on. You wanna go faster, get something that weighs 350 lbs less, has two wheel drive, 5 speeds, etc...!

Get some aftermarket cv joint guards that go on the lower a-arm. Sticks like to eat the boots!

What are the opinions on the Polaris front and rear cv guards? i have them, but only since the snow came. How do they work in the woods?

tyler711-I assume you're talking about the stock guards. I had a stick come up through the center of the a-arm and tear the boot up. The stock guards are really designed for frontal protection. The M.U.D. ones I put on are diamond plate steel and cover the front, underside, and rear of the a-arm. I haven't installed the rear covers, I guess I'll wait until I tear one of those!

I added the skid plates for the a-arms, front brush guard, rear bumper and EBS.
