shouldnt matter with performance but will allow your filter to get dirty and need replacement sooner.
I use a K&N with an Outerwares (basically the same as polaris prefilter).

I run a K&N also, and use the Polaris prefilter....I had the prefilter when I put the K&N on, so used it.....also tried Uni-filter, but like the K&N better....

If your not running in dusty, dirty or sandy conditions you should be fine without it but I see no need to run without one because it shouldn't hamper performance at all and they are water resistant and keep the filter cleaner longer.

Also the K&N will save you money in the long run being cleanable/ reusable and will add some performance gains being freer flowing.
Just IMHO.
