There is also mods that can really wake it up. From factory the clutching is very tame and does not let it hit higher rpm's. This can be changed. Plastic thumb throttle. ALL Polaris's have plastic thumb throttles and I NEVER heard of one braking. I also dont want a metal throttle for the winter unless you really want to freez your thumb off.

Well, Funny thing is, all Sport Quads come with a Rear Swingarm Skid Plate, and anyone who races mx, takes them off.. So one would think it would come factory on Utilities which are used mostly on trails and for work, where you will be driving over things that would be likely to FUBAR your rear disk, and sprocket..
Well I don't remember what it cost, but i believe it was like $3,900 (ish) I don't really remember, but for another $1,000-$1,500 there are much better choices..
I guess as polaris says "Polaris 330 engine that's up to 100cc's larger than its competitors" They must be compairing it to 250cc machines, so i guess if its in that class, it's probably an OK machine... But I have a 400cc Suzuki Z400, and that machine makes the TrailBoss look like a pile of crap. Maybe i am just compairing 2 different classes of machine... One of the machines i told her she should have got was the Yamaha Wolvereen, which is a 350cc, and i can guarentee it would have walked all over this TrailBoss.. and it had a Gear transmission, which i personally thing is a better transmission then a CVT..
Mine Z400 has a metal thumb throttle, as well as a metal clutch, and brake handle, the Thumb throttle doesn't get cold because it has a rubber sleve over it... and well when i am riding in the winter i have gloves on, so it doesn't make a difference, if you arn't riding with gloves on in the winter, your hands will be too numb to know if the lever is cold.
One of the other things on my pet peve list with this Trail boss is the Exhaust system... Yeah i guess its quite, but c'mon how restrictive is it!? I am sure that in it self robs ALOT of power.. I'd bed the CVT could even be tuned to make it a better machine, but if i paid all the money to 'fix' the so-so setup/parts that came on it to make it a good machine, i could have spent that money off the bat and had a better machine off the show room floor..
Its the same thing with people who fix up Rice Rockets.. You take a little honda civic and put $10,000 in to engine work to make it "fast" you could have spent that $10,000 on a real 'fast' car right off the show room floor. It's just not logicle

Hello ThaChad. Quite frankly, it does not sound like this quad will make you happy no matter what. You really should go away, because you are not asking for any help. And you will not be happy with any answer you get. Your comparison of the Trailboss to the Z400 is as silly as comparing a pickup truck to a Camaro. The clutching, quiet exhaust and the smooth suspension are probably exactly what the ladies want in the machine. It's to bad you don't understand this!! The rest of your complaints are pure BS.

You are comparing a Z400 to a 500lb utility quad. That makes no sense! And most sport quads do not come with swingarm guards. ALL Polaris non IRS DOES come with a rear sprocket/chain guard and it works very well. The wolverine is also a great machine but alot more money.
As for rice rockets. I am a firm believer of V8 power but there is a thrill of getting 275-350HP out of a 4 banger. People do it because they can. It is a challenge and a hobbie. I have seen many 4cyl cars totally kill beefed up V8's. Oh and if you can find me a $10,000 fast car off the showroom floor then I want 3 of them.
Anyways this is a pointless post. We are here to help people out with problems. If the problem is the whole machine then there is nothing we can do about it. She obviously wanted comfort, reliability, and automatic. You were dead set against it. Thats where the problem is. You are lucky to even have your wife ride with you. Most vives dont like it. Get it fixed and be happy riding. Thats what it is all about. If she likes the machine thats all that should count.

It's obvious my post was not read carefully.. As i said i am compairing 2 different worlds, its obvious Polaris rates the Trail Boss at the top of the class with 100cc's more then others in its class, which is showing that they are compairing it to 250cc's instead of being relyistic and compairing it to a 350 where it would get crushed..
All Sport quads come with Swing arm skid plates, most are plastic, but they are still there. the Guard you say it comes with is a piece of plastic slightly larger then the disc and sprocket.. and only one one side, so if a rock comes from the other side, or is not perfectly round, bye bye sprocket or Disc..
I didn't say you could get a fast car for $10,000.. If you read my post i said they put another $10,000 into an engine to make it fast... If you take the $10,000 they put into an engine, and the $18,000 the car cost to buy, you have $28,000. I can guarentee you can get a car that will go just as fast, or faster in the $28,000 price range.
This thread was never about the whole machine being less then up to par for me.. It was about the engine back firing/missing.. Other members made it into a feud about me hating Polaris and/or the Machine... I was just mearly defending what defeloped my opinion about the machine... I show my valid arguments..
Any way, thanks to the people who actually READ what i posted, and helped with the problem i posted, instead of getting defensive over Polaris and never actually reading what i had to say.
It wasn't me who turned this thread into an argument.

I am calling it a POS because the whole thing..
It is extremely under powered, It has no skid plate under the rear swing arm, Alot of plastic parts, that should be metal, like the thumb throttle, brake lever, etc.

Hello ThaChad. You are abolutely right. You have your right to your opinion. But hey, if I don't happen to agree with what you are saying, then that is my opinion. I am not in an argument with you, I am just stating my opinions. I read all your posts. No, I did not mis-read them. This disc brake and sprocket guard discs are not plastic. They are metal. And I have found that they protect my sprocket and disc brake quite well. The brake handles seem beefier than the metal one on my sled, which incidently I had to replace because it broke. I think the muffler system is great, they are much quieter than those noisy piped quads that some people drive on the trails. My belt has been maintainence free even though I plow snow. I am sure that your good buddies at the dealership can figure out a simple belt problem. And carb adjustment is pretty much a no-brainer for someone with some experience. And you are right, the Wolverine might out accelerate the Trailboss. But I hate to tell you thaChad, the whole world does not revolve around acceleration. The Wolverine has manual transmission, less suspension travel, 4wd that cannot go into 2wd so heavy steering, it is narrower for less stability, less towing capacity and last but not least the wolverine is $1400 dollars more. Nothing makes the Wolverine look attractive to your wife. IN MY OPINION.

Probably not what you are looking for in a quad... sell it while it's still like new.
Your jetting is probably way off. Jet from the bottom up.. so make sure your low speed (pilot) is good before you go to the needle and then the main. Without knowing what altitude and temperature it's too tough to say what jets you should have.

i'll tell you what a POS is. I bought a new 2004 Yamaha Warrior. Within the first 10 hours of riding it went back to the dealer 3 times. The 4th time they had to replace the engine as the piston was egg shaped from the factory. Thats when i went out and bought my trailboss. I went for an all day ride with some friends and had to take my wifes trailboss because the POS yamaha was in the shop again and found that after all day of riding all different etrrain my body wasn't beat all up like it used to be when i would ride the Yamaha. I sold that Yamaha for a lot less than i Paid for the polaris and have not regretted it even a little bit! The trailboss is a comfortable, easy machine to ride that will basically do just about anything you want it to as long as you don't want to go 100mph. By the way, the steel chain and gear guard on my trailboss have huge gouges in it, but yet i have never had a chain come off or break. I think that you are basing your opinion on the trailboss without really giving it a chance. Good luck on it anyhow.

It sounds like you based your purchase on price and not research. For $325 you could call Rick Ritter and wake it up. Sounds like you wanted a sport quad to begin with. No amount of mods or money are going to change your opinion, sell it and buy something else. Then find out, there is no perfect machine out there.

You must be speaking of Utility quads, because every Sport quad comes with a skid plate under the swingarm.
You have not proven anything, to prove something, you would actually have to show 'proof' of something be correct, or something being incorrect.. You have just made statements, not given any proof of anything.
look, this is pointless. I don't speciffically have a problem with Polaris. Just this model. and as i said since its obvious polaris is rating this model with the 250cc class, its probably at the top of the class... but I being more relistic am compairing it to the 350cc class, and it doesn't stand up to par.
As was said earlier, my wife likes it for whatever reason, she didn't pick it out, the sales guy told her it was the best choice, but in either case, she is happy with it. All i was asking about was the poping/missing condition at low speeds. Let it at that, i challanged as to why i thought it was a POS, for that matter i didn't even say ALL TrailBoss's were a POS, just this one.. But i guess ya'll like to argu.
