There was just a post comparing the 400 and the 500, you should definetly take a look. For me, the 400 is plenty of power. Many will say that you should just step up to the 500, but I feel that the 400 is plenty of power for me. Top speed is somewhere around 45 on dirt.

Here is the link to that thread, its good reading: clicky

I ride mostly small mud bogs and feilds. Although theres a swamp near me that i wouldnt dare go through without 4wd. Is the sportsman an overall good machine?

The engine sound? Or are you talking about the driveline noise that is more prevalent on the larger bikes?

the 400 is a great starter quad but personally I feel that if your gonna go with a single cylinder, the price difference to move up to the 500h.o. is well worth it for the amount of power/torque you get out of the 500h.o.

If what I hear about a 500h.o. EFI is true then I think I would wait for it. If there was a 500h.o. EFI on the showroom floor when I was looking for a new quad I would have gotten it instead of the 700EFI. the 500 is really all a person needs but everyone has there own reason for going with the biggest out there.

you should just spend the extra few hundred dollars to get the 500.
