RAD valve install results

Some of you wanted to know how I liked the Delta V Force 2 rad valve that I installed in my 400 Xplorer this weekend so here is the rundown.

The instalation was very easy and straight forward,no problems at all.

I set the reeds to full loose for the most gain of bottom end power.
I can feel a SLIGHT differance in the low end but it is very minamal. The throttle response is a little crisper too but nothing to write home about. Since the 400 revs out so quick and spends very little time in the lower rpm range{or at least the way I ride mine} I am going to take the valve back out and reset the reeds to a medium tention. I think that will help make a little more power in the rpm range that I use the most.

All in all, on a stock motor, I think the 150 bucks that the RAD valve cost is not worth it.
Like I said before, I could feel a slight differance but all most not even enough to notice. If I had it to do over again..I wouldnt. Instead I would spend the money on a clutch kit.
Im sure it would make a bigger differance if you were piped but on a stock motor,I say "Save your money".

Thanks for the reply.I was going to add them to my Xplorer to.I wont now.My dealer told me that without the pipe,they would not be real helpful,once again,thank you ,==Bill

Andy,

I have a 2001 Xplorer 400, and bought the Boyesen Rad valve to put on it. The difference was pretty noticable. Throttle response is much better. Did you go down on main jet size with the Delta V-force? My Xplorer came with a 200 main jet from the factory. With that jet, the bike would want to flood out in a mudhole. I checked the plug, and it was really black. Boyesen recommends going down 2 to 4 main jet sizes with their rad valve. So, I went down to the local dealership and bought a 185, 190, and 195 main jets($5 each for Mikuni brand jets). I changed to the 195, and the bike really screams now. I weigh 160, and the bike will pull a wheelie in high range. It has always been able to pull one in low range, but never in high. It's great. After putting in the 195, I rode for a while and rechecked the plug. It's still real dark, somewhere between chocolate and black. I could probably get more power out of it by going down to a 190, but it performs plenty good enough now for my tastes. Also, if you go too lean, you can damage the engine. Note: the paper I got with the specs on my bike indicated that it had a 210 main jet. However, it only had the 200. From 2000 to 2001, I think Polaris changed the air box design to one that flows less air. My filter is a clamp-on. This may explain them going with a smaller jet from the factory. Anyway, hope this helps. You may also want to make sure that the air screw on the carb is set to 1.5 turns out. Mine wasn't set there from the factory. Later,

Did you ever try the smaller jets without the RAD valve? I bet that is where a lot of your gains came from.

Rob, you may be right. I didn't change the jets until after installing the rad valve. However, Boyesen says to go 2-4 sizes smaller than what you are currently running when installing the rad valve. Seems to me that 2-4 sizes smaller without the rad valve would have been too lean. Am I right, I don't know. I'm sure the bike is set a little rich from the factory. Is spark plug reading very accurate? There was a noticeable difference going from a 200 to a 195, and the plug is still real dark. If I could, I would like to put the 190 in there and see if it also makes a big difference. Thanks for any replies.

Typically a performance add on such as a RAD valve is designed to flow more air, thereby increasing horsepower. Normally if the machine was jetted "on the edge" the manufacturer would reccommend increasing 2 to 4 sizes. These machines of ours are pretty rich from the factory. Just be careful when it starts to get cold out. Temperature can have a large effect on jetting. That is why the factory jet's them so rich!

Rob,

Are you trying to say that when the rad valve is installed you should go up in main jet size??
