He said he didnt know of a way, so I guess it's back to the old switch idea. Seems easy to do though, just got to tap into that wire as it goes through the pod. On is overridden mode, off is for normal.

That certainly seems to be the way it would work. I’m going to identify exactly what contact is made in the switch to know which wires are affected then put a jumper between the wires to see what happens.

When my factory service manual with the schematic gets here I’ll have a better idea of what’s going on but I thought it would be easy to set the “work lights” up to be what they should be, back-up lights that turn on when you shift into reverse. Nope, at least not so far. A wrench at the dealer told me to just tap into which ever wire coming out of the shift sensor at the tranny goes hot when shifted into reverse. He said that’s the wire that “tells” the speedo to show “R” on the shift indicator. I surmised that if there’s a wire at the shift sensor telling the speedo something then that wire must go between the sensor and the speedo. I pulled the gang connector off the back of the speedo and checked each terminal with a test light as I worked the shift lever in and out of reverse. Not a single one of them went hot when shifted into reverse.

I haven’t pierced the wires coming out of the sensor to test them yet, I’ll probably just wait for the schematic. But there’s a big difference between a basic electrical system and electronics.

I also would love reverse lights. One thing to look at is the reverse alarm that polaris sells. It seems to be a 12v beeper that is activated when you shift into reverse, and is compatible with our atv's. If that is true, than it must tap into a reverse-activated 12v line. Next time I am at the dealer I'll take a look around. Just a thought; its on PurePolaris's site if you want to take a look. Let me know if you try either of these mods, I am looking forward to trying both.

I just put the chains back on the tires, we are supposed to get 18" of the white stuff tonight.

I don't know what models you are working on but my 03 has a white wire under the hood that only grounds when you put it in reverse. I hooked up my hot wire on my back-up light to the main hot on the battery with a fuse. Then I run the negative wire to the white wire under the hood. When I pull it in reverse the back-up light automaticly comes on.

Thank you, Sportsman70003. Any more details on that white wire so I can find it easier?

I'm not for sure about your 04.5 but on my 03 it is on the right side under the hood while you are facing the atv. There was a bunch of wires and it was the only white one that was not hooked to anything.

Alright, thanks. Did you also wire it to a switch like the work lights on the 05's, or did you leave it just for reverse? I'll look at my service manual later and see if I can find it in the schematics.

I used to have a switch but got to lazy the flip it back and forth LOL. So I wired it to come on in reverse only anytime I want to use it like a work light I just pull it in reverse.

Cool, thanks for the help. That is definetly something I will be doing soon. I am tired of having to hold down the brake lever for light when plowing at night.
