How are they supposed to know if you abused it or not....if they just started sending free cables out to everyone who broke one...... plus you did get a free one...ya whiner... . If you want your cable to be there for when getting home depends on it ... cut off about 2 to 3 foot section and set that up as your plowing piece . Save the rest of your cable for off road situations. I cut my cable down to 25 feet and I carry 2 75' peices of 3000 lb webbing . I found that it was a pain to keep it all nice on the spool and when you did use it for a short pull the rest of the cable was getting squished....and if it was over lapped anywhere it crimped it. Plus....you will get the exact same cable on that inferior brand name winch........

There is a outside chance your dealer could be reimbursed by warn for the cable anyway. If not, it makes sense for the dealer to eat the cost of a new cable. Replacement cables are around $10.00. Which most likely wholesale around 5 bucks. For that small amout of change, the dealer comes out looking like a good guy. Who will probably get your business in the future, because he treated you right. I think we have all felt the same way you do, a time or two, when things dont go the way they should. Especially when hard earned moola gets dished out on something we consider to be "the best" product. We all try and avoid junk, so we spend more and sometimes feel cheated. But you do have a good winch, over time you will be happy. Besides if you had a extra winch cable sitting around your garage, your wife would probably throw it away, because "you never use this thing and its just taking up space".

Sorry about the whiner comment ,I was just poking some fun at you......but now that you mention it ...you were calling about a part that already had been replaced , was worth 20 $ and could have been prevented if you had set up a cable just for plowing . All that aside my apoligies or being rude and/or ofending you .

I can tell you that I have had warn and ramsey atv winches and used a plow with both. Because the cable basically right angles over the bottom fairlead roller when used with a plow the cable will get distorted and eventually fray and fail. Both companies will tell you that you need to winch pretty much straight off the drum and use the fairlead as a guide for spooling. Yes it will pull you at a hard angle out of a problem. The problem is your cable pays a price each time. Nothing is worse than running your bare hands when spooling out the cable and poking a frayed wire into your skin. I fully expect my cable to fray and be junk after / during a plowing season so I put on about 6' of a made up cable. I save my 50 footer for winching when the plowing is over.
This year I tried the small winch that Polaris sells that mounts to the plow and hooks top of the rack area. The winch winds the cable back on the spool without any fairlead and so far the cable still looks like new. Montana Jacks has a winch mount that lets you rotate your winch so that it can free spool for plowing without putting much stress at all on the fairlead to save the cable.
My point is that it doesn't matter which winch you use, the cable is going to catch hell plowing. I haven't tried the synthetic rope yet but I feel that will work just fine with no problems.
I think your dealer absolutely gave you customer service above and beyond by giving you a new cable. They are hoping to bring you back in by keeping you happy. This is not a manufacturing defect in the cable but using a product in a situation that will eventually have some sort of failure. Bottom line is if you put on a Ramsey, Warn or Superwinch cable and use it the same way it is going to fail. Is it a warranty item? Should they put another warning or use sticker / tag telling us not to use it this way? I don’t know…I think there is enough stickers on my quad, winch etc on the stuff I own to wallpaper a whole house now.

Another thing to note is the Ramsey and the Warn in the past (along with a few other brands) are the same winch with different branding. For a while there the 2000 lb winch was sold by about 4 different companies under different names. From a quick look at their sites, it appears as if nothing has changed and they are the same basic winches.
Hi TEXMud,
Are you saying that the current Warn and Ramsey 2500 and 3000 winches are in fact the very same units and are made side by side at the same factory and to the same standards and only are branded differently?

xcrider- I definitely don't want to waste the money on an electric plow winch when I have the big daddy already mounted on the frontend. my wifes dad has the warn electric lift and it sucks monkey *****, it's slow and is pretty much worn out already and won't lift the 48" blade off the ground anymore. I am gonna look into either using a synthetic rope or a 6' piece just for winter plowing. one of the biggest reasons I want to go to a Ramsey winch is because of the limited liftime warranty. I may have problems with the cables on both but if I burn the warn winch up after it's 1 year warranty I am SOL but if the Ramsey burns up it is still gonna be in warranty.

Hey silverbullet, when I was having my cable problems I phoned Warn to get a part number on the bigger fairlead roller they come out with and the guy that answered the phone was a real ignorant sob. I explained all I wanted was a part number because my dealer didn't have it yet and the guy kept cutting me off and being a real $#@! It's unfortunate it only takes one guy like that but I'll never deal with Warn again. Like it was said before, when you talk to all these companies that sell plows they all know they kill the winch cables, and even admit it, but they all seem to forget to mention that when you buy them.

I found that harbor freight has a 3/16 x 20ft. replacement winch cable for $6.99, this would be good for winter months. I am also looking into the amsteel blue winch rope on ebay.
