Does my '05 700 efi have a rev limiter that would kick in while in high range?

Yes, they all have rev limiters to prevent engine damage.

If the rev limiter kicks in, what does it feel like?

go warm it up fully and pin the throttle in neutral or do the same in your car, or a friends car. If it is anything like a car it will intermittently stop the spark transmission until rpm's drop then continue the spark and repeat this cycle as long as you maintain full throttle. It's a quick cycle that usually creates a bucking situation, so avoid it at all costs, probably not as noticeable with a CVT machine.

Ok, here's the problem. Yesterday, me and my grandfather were out riding and we come to an open field. We decided to race a little and he kept up with me on his '99 sportsman 500. When my 700 efi was gaining speed, it felt like it was missing once my speed increased. I felt sure my 700 would smoke him but I couldn't even pull away from him. I think there is something definetly wrong. At first I thought this might be the rev limiter but surely it wouldn't limit my machine that much. Let me know what you think.

It should sound as if its cutting out, because thats what it is doing. My 800 does this in low if you gun it. Since you have an 05, turn on the tachometer on your display and see what RPM you are hitting. I dont know about hte carbed models, but the 700/800EFI has a limiter of 6500 +/-200 RPM according to the service manual

you may have a bad coil, wouldn't be the first 05 to have this happen. you should smoke that 500, unless maybe you weigh 400 lbs and your grandfather is only 98lbs

Not to be insensitive, but the image of a 98 lb grandfather racing across a field on a Sportsman 500 breaks me up.

It is a funny visual, I though about that after I wrote it, I'm sure he has a good sense of humor too.

I don't really know much about the sportsmans or even claim to know much about anything, but I've always heard that the majority of the quads (stock ones anyway) have roughly the same top speed, or at least within a few MPH's. So if you were topped out the senerio sounds about correct. I would think the 700 should get there quicker than the 500, but it's hard to take away from the 500. I've heard lots of guys on here have went back to them after a 600 or 700. Is the 99 stock, there is also a possibility of something aftermarket that would give you false results.
