04.5 SPortsman 500ho only gets to 48mph??

My '04 500 HO did 55-57 mph right from the dealer. After I put a K & N filter and iridium plug I can hit 60mph pretty much consistently. My buddy has a '02 500 HO and that thing will do 65 mph...He has the older Good year tires though, which are less agressive than the Raw Hides I have and he also does not have a winch so that is why he is a bit faster than me. 48 mph is definitely on the slow side for a 500 HO.

I Just got done doing a speed run, i guess my spedo is off, GPS Says 53mph, but it took a while to get there, 0-40 is quick. To answer some other questions, yes i changed the nylon nut, the weight setup is what they recommend on the web site(just the screw with no head in the shoulder,3.3maybe?, i forget the weight), it doesn't have the "creep" at idle. I didn't do the clutch mod because the weights were hitting the rollers and stopping them, do you thing it will make a difference if i do it? I guess 53 is in line with some 500's, and truthfully i probably won't have much use for the wide open speed where i ride, but its good to know its there. I don't want to do any performance mods, so i'll live with it at 53mph unless there is something else to check. Thanks to all that replied, i love this forum!

That is it taching when you hit 40 at WOT? You may need a primary spring with more spring rate. You might try the Heelclicker spring and see if it gives you any more top end. If it does, there are spring alternatives that will give you low engagement and a higher spring rate than the stock spring.

I think you're asking what the tach reads at 40mph, truthfully i don't know what it reads i was too busy watching the road. It'll take a few days to get back to you with that info cause its going to snow friday & sat. i'll check as soon as i can and post. which heelclicker spring should i try?

You will probably get more top end out of it once it is broke in. 90 miles is not much and I am guessing most of that was plowing. Wait until you get around 200-300 miles of hot weather / working the motor hard miles. It will be a new machine!
