broken winch cable
Does anybody have any ideas on how to temporarily repair a broken winch cable. It snapped down by the hook, and was from lots of plowing this winter. I want to repair it just in case we get more snow. I did order another one, but wont be in until the end of the week. Thanks

A quick, easy fix, would be to take the cable and slide two ordinary nuts onto the cable. Make sure the holes in the nuts are big enough to thread the cable back into after the winch hook is looped through. After the hook is looped into the cable and the loose end of the cable is looped back into the nuts, take a hammer and smash the **** out of the nuts down on the cable. Guarenteed, the cable will never slip back through the nuts. You will eventually have to cut your hook free some day. But you will only loose a few inches of cable and the 2 nuts will save you a trip to town.

I used two of these, but the next size up. Just be sure to keep that thimble on the wire where it goes through the hook. I just keep the right sized wrench in the quad; if the cable breaks I just move the clamps.
Also, may I suggest that you keep that broken/spliced cable on there all winter. It will most definetly break again, why ruin another cable? Put the new one on in the summer so you don't cut your hands while winching. Just get some nice clamps like I have there^^ and keep repairing it in the winter.

When my cable broke at the beginning of winter, i pulled the cable off and went to home depot and bought a tow strap for $12.00, I cut the hook off of one end and wraped the strap around the drum of the winch, i have been using that all winter , it's awesome, no worry of it breaking. Hope this helps!
