800 engine noise
#1
I posted this question awhile back, but not many replies. I have a new 800, approx35 miles on it now. It runs great, but it has a fairly loud tapping coming from the area by right floor board. Sounds like a gear noise. It only does it when machine is warmed up, and at idle. The dealer called polaris, and they said it is ok. I have always had Honda bikes in the past, they were always quiet, no engine noise at all. any ideas? Thanks, RLB

Almost sounds to me like the normal primary clutch rattle sound that annoyed me when I bought my first sp600, only heard at idle and not moving. You wouldn't notice it on a honda because they don't have a cvt transmission. Although you'd think it would be more noticible on the left side near the clutch cover, it can transfer through the aluminum motor like a megaphone. Listen to an sp400 or sp500 sometime! They are 10 times as noisey at idle. It also could just be the normal valvetrain/rattle sound these twins make. I would try to use a stethascope to pin point the source of the noise by listening to where it is loudest. let us know what you find.

I also have a SP800, it also has the same noise, my dealer also told me it's normal, I called Polaris & they said it's normal but they took my vin # & said that they would have no problem with fixing any problem I would have in that area even if the warranty was up. I have 650 miles on mine and no problems at all! You need to just ride and forget about it like me.........Until you hear it at idle again lol, I know how you feel, but just ride.
