700 EFI sputtering???
#1
Hey guys, I need help. Went riding last week and went through some pretty deep water...up to racks. The bike ran great and all before and for hours afterwords but it's been sitting for a week now. I bought a K&N filter for it today and installed it. I backed out of the garage after it warmed up and took it for a quick spin and then it happened...SPUTTERING. If I hit the throttle hard and fast it sputters and moves slowly, but if I graduallly give it gas it is ok. I thought maybe the filter was causing trouble so I took it off and hit the gas without the filter and the same...then put the original back on and the same...I did notice a few water drops in the air box after I tried it without a filter. Could it be the spark plug is fouled? Went to Autozone and picked up a Bosch Platinum plug but have not put it in yet....Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Possibly the plug is fouled, so swap it to be sure. Also, since you ran it in deep water, could be water somewhere yet that is shorting the electrical, but I doubt it. Sounds more like something is wrong with the injection or something is plugged. Check your vent lines make sure none are plugged, make sure there isn't water in your fuses, etc. Dunno, could be multiple things...

Check the plug boots for moisture, sounds like you have a misfire under load. I'd replace the plugs with NGK's and apply dielectric grease inside the boots to keep moisture out. The spark will take the path of least resistance to ground so it may be jumping down the side of the plug inside the boot to the plug base.

I was having very similar problems with mine, and after I replaced the speedometer pod, all the problems went away. Very strange, and those problems were always after pressure washing the bike, or getting it very wet. Eventually, the speedo quit working entirely.
