I took a look at the dealership and the silencer brackets look the same on the sportsman 800 and 500 (they didn't have any 600s or 700s to look at)
So my question is are the mounting brackets the same on the 800 as the 700? i want to replace the silencer because i have issues when people say something is dual exhaust and it realy is just two silencers joined at the rear not 2 separate pipes all the way back. i dont know if anyone else feels the same about it, i just may be a wierdo. another question is, if the mounting brakets are the same could i put an aftermarket silencer for a 700 on without power loss.

The exhaust joins together making 1 pipe, that pipe goes into 1 silencer, that same silencer has another pipe that connects to bridge a second silencer. i have not seen any exhaust kits out for the 800 yet. so to me it seems that 1 aftermarket silencer would work and make it a little more throaty. don't get me wrong i love the dual exhaust look, but i just don't like the set up. i'll take a picture and post it so you see what i am talking about.

Having the dual silencers will help free up some back pressure. If you put it into just one silencer it would not breath as well and you would have the performance of maybe a 700. You get more HP out of an exhaust that is bigger and has more ways for the exhaust to excape. I understand that it is only one pipe. I think they did this to either keep the hp down for federal reasons or to balance the backpressure in both of the cylinders. If you look at cars like Mustangs they dont have a single pipe for each side. It has a cross pipe in the middle. I am sure someone is in the process of making a header pipe with single pipes for each cylinder. This would dramaticly increase hp. From a hp stand point and a mechanics point of view I would not put on a single silencer.

I agree putting the single silencer would not acheive much and or loss power...but the real challenge should be how to make a twin cylinder 4-wheeler dual exhaust...sit and ponder that one...all tho that might open it to much hmmm...interesting...
