There is a rather significant difference between the two as Bytor explains. Look at Service Manual and you will find MANY such as the front centralized hilliard versus the old hubs. The rear transmission is different as well as all the items mentioned above.

 

nice research byter, I looked on polarisindustries.com and only seen the differences that I pointed out. Indyguy asked how he could tell the difference from a 04 and and 04.5' and to look at the guage pod and see if it has an electronic fuel guage would have to be the simplest way right?

I'd say the hubs are the easiest thing to see. If you look at it and it has the black hub in the center, like on a Scrambler, it is an 04. If it has a rubber cap in the center, like on the rear wheels, it is an 04.5. You can see this from 20 yards away, not so with the gas gauge [img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif[/img].
