Default Problems with my 2003 700 Polaris

I was wondering if someone could help with a problem. My 700 sometimes acts if it is starving for gas at low speeds. You can slightly pull out the chock and it will clear up and when you push the choke back in, it starts running rough again. If you let completely off on the gas, it will backfire and eventually die; however, during these conditions you can open the throttle completely up and the bike will run like a scolded dog. This poor running condition doesn't happen all of time. You may drive it for several hundred miles with no problem and then the next time you ride the bike the problem sticks its head up. I've had the carb apart and found nothing out of the ordinary. What's puzzling is that the problems comes and goes. Does anyone have any ideas.

Welcome to the forums. Sounds like you have something partially blocked in your carb. If you can pull the choke and it runs better then its not getting enough gas and the backfiring is also pointing to a lean condition. Have you took it completly apart and cleaned the carb?

Yea it sounds like you are lean to me. Maybe you are lean on your pilot jet or maybe the needle. Have you done a plug check?

Default Problems with my 2003 700 Polaris

My buddies 03 700 sp had a recall on the oem jets. When the dealer went to replace them he noticed the k&n filter, and pure polaris exahust and installed the recomended jet. Still cuts out sometimes under severe torque (uphills and full throtle). Last weekend we rode and it was real bad so I told him to run on reserve and for about 30-40 miles he had no problems. Any suggestions what that could be? We just installed a 800 header pipe and he has the high flow airbox lid. He's going to take it in and have it rejetted this week. So far I don't notice much increase at all from the header.

Anybody else have problems with leaky storage compartments on 05 sportsmans?

alot of the time that will be a partially restricted air filter, when you have it hammered it will suck air in hard due to the low pressure from the pistons but when at low rpm and idle your machine may be starving for air... you cant run an engine without tons of air

Had the same problem on my 600, check the vent off the bottom of the carb. There is a check valve could be bad or the hose might be obstructed or kinked. This will cause your 700 to do exactly what you are describing. Hope this helps.

I had a similar problem with the wifes 700. It would run fine then it would idle rough and shut off. Pulled the choke on a little and it ran great. All indications pointed to the idle circuit. Upon inspecting the carb during the teardown, I found a speck of dirt caught inside the pilot jet. The speck was that tiny I needed a led light and a magnifying glass to see it. Funny thing is... compressed air would not blow it out. I had to tap the jet on a block of wood to dislodge it. The pilot jet is designed like a dirt trap the inlet is larger than the outlet . I hope this helps.

Thanks for the information regarding the pilot jet. I dimantled my carb and blew out with compressed air, but the problem stills exists from time to time. That's what is so puzzling, this problem may only surface every so often, not all of the time. Which jet is considered the pilot jet?
