Default Polaris Sportsman gurus, need advice!

I bought a 2005 Polaris Sportsman 500HO about four days ago. I rode it only two days and notice that when I reverse the machine sputters and jerks. If I use the override switch while reversing the sputtering stops and it reverses smoothly. I did go through some water during my rides but do not have any engine problems other than the reverse issue (and a bent tie rod but thats another post). Any suggestions on what could cause this or what I can do to fix it?

Thats how the overide works its a safty feature. You can only have full power in reverse when you push the override.

Totally normal. Also 4x4 in reverse only works when the over ride button is used.

So that sputtering and jerking is normal? That's a huge relief if so. I thought water might have got in some where.

As stated before,.. that's EXACTLY what it's supposed to do,... your quad has a lot of torque, and the last thing u need is all of it when it's unexpected in reverse......
example I have........
brother of a friend was asked to "back the quad into the enclosed trailer"
he hit the override button, hit the throttle.... and got the shock of his life when it jerked so hard that he came up off of the seat, his thigh hit and locked the throttle on FULL.... as he BACKWARD WHEELIED UP THE RAMP INTO THE TRAILER!!!!!!!!!!!

he hit his head on the top of the door opening (slicing it wide open), and the rear wheels of the 500 whacked into an upper metal storage compartment in the trailer and destroyed it,......

it's kinda fockin funny today,... but DAMN that what scary,... and lucky he isn't permanently injured or worse....

so just be glad u have the safety features )))
