The problem with your magnum seems to be exactly what was wrong with my sportsman. We tried everything and it ended up being the exaust cam. Check out your cam shaft thats sounds like the problem.

Try adujusting the valves they set at .006 check the cam for a bad lobe while you have the cover off. Check the throttle play at the ETC along with the air filter and intake boots. When mine does this it is the vales out of adjustment but ifthey arent adjusted it will ruin your cam. Nedrah all he needs to do to bypass the revlimiter is to follow the black wire from the revlimiter (under the rack) and unplug it from the wire block. This will by pass the limiter but you will still need to hold the button in for 4x4 in reverse.

Wow, this must be a Magnum characteristic, because my '96 Magnum 425 is doing the same thing. I have already ruled out the ETC, air filter, carb vent lines, and intake boot. It is definitely running rich since it darn near fouled the plug and it is blowing some serious black smoke. I will check the valves and look into the rev limiter and look into bi passing the reverse override. Also, I know it's not the jetting since it has been spot on prior to this. The carb also looks fine so I can rule that out.

How often are you having to adjust the valves? Are they coming loose that often or are the valve seats wearing?

My valves dont get loose they get tight on the intake and it does it about twice a year when we run them real hard or get them hung up and hot.

The CV joints will interchange.I have found that the chassis are the same on my 425 and my 400 Sortsman.

Do you know what the intake valves and exhaust valves should be set to (clearance wise)?
