SP 600 4x4 not working !
Type in a search for 4X4 or AWD and you'll get a bunch of hits. The Sportsman has a couple issues that may cause the AWD to fail. One is a failure of the speedometer itself, or the speed sensor located down on the hub. That seems to be what most people here report. Also, does your AWD light on the handlebar illuminate? If it doesn't, you likely have a wiring problem.
My AWD began failing intermittently. The AWD light was also out. By jiggling the wires, I was able to make the light flash occasionally. I narrowed it down to two wires coming out of my headlight pod that had severed. The insulation around the wires looked fine, but the wire itself had severed. They were gray wires that were packed in along with all the others that run out of the AWD switch on the handlebar. This group of wires passes through the headlight pod and down to the hubs.

I guess my first troubleshooting measure would be to change the front gear drive fluid. I ride year round and change all fluids at spring-fall intervals. The few 4X4 engagement quirks I've had are usually before maintenence time and fresh fluids have done the trick for me. However there are some machanical and/or electrical problems that may occur, I hope your fix is an easy one.
Good luck
