Trailboss stalling while turning ???
#1
My son's Tboss is stalling while he's turning at slow to moderate speed. Can you shed some light on this? Any help would be a huge benefit.
ps. Still under warranty... i hope this isn'tt just the beginning of problems.

Sounds like the ETC is not adjusted correctly, happened on our Boss also. The ETC is the black box located on the top of the right handlebar and consists of a spring-loaded mechanism that is designed to prevent a full throttle runaway if the throttle cable breaks. When it is adjusted wrong it can cause the engine to stop when the handlebars are turned as the slack is pulled back by the ETC mechanism, this is especially noticeable at low and idle conditions. It is very easy to adjust and does not need a trip to the dealer; if you want to tackle it yourself check your throttle lever, you should have between 1/16" - 1/8" freeplay in the lever. If there is not enough freeplay or too much, simply slide the boots off the throttle cable inline adjuster, loosen the lock nut and turn the adjuster until the desired freeplay is achieved. Tighten up the locknut, fire up the motor and let the engine idle, turn the handelbars left and right and you should notice no change in engine RPM.
May help to check your idle speed and increase it a little if necessary.
Hopefully that will do it for you. Let me know if I can be of any more help.

Wow... sorry about the delayed reply - was shipped out of town and didn't have a chance to get to it.
I checked and adjusted the cable/lock nut coming from the ETC box. You're right - it was very simple. There was no freeplay in the thumb throttle, so I made a couple of adjustments and fixed the freeplay. I was a bit better, but it would still cut out when I turned left at idle. I freed-up the cable routings so the throttle and choke cables weren't interfering. Took the panels off for a better look at the choke cable. I moved it, attempting to lessen the tension. That didn't work. So I actually pulled on the cable while the bike was at idle, turned the wheels to various positions to the left, and had mixed results. The bike is rideable now, but has developed a backfire - seldom, but it bothers me because I can't figure it out. While riding, it is less prone to cut the engine out while under throttle, but it still happened twice. To me, it just isn't safe - my 16yr old son rides this bike, so I won't take chances. I am definetely not mechanically gifted, but I'll try anything. If you have further advice, please give it. A trip to the dealer isn't out of the question because we're still under warranty, but I'd like to understand the issue. Thanks.

Hey Lon,
Leave the cover off on the ETC and also the front plastic. Drive it around the yard and keep an eye on the ETC to make sure the metal tabs do not touch. This will also ensure that the cables are not getting hung upwith the plastic off. If all is fine with the plastic off then it is still hanging up under the plastic. Most likely it is the choke cable that is hanging up if anything. Hope this helps. if not reply and we will try and think of what else it could be.
