Default Valve Adjustment

Has anyone adjusted the valves on a 500HO? I've been told that you can and then I've been told not to touch them. Mine chatter alittle more than I like.

My exhaust valve clearance was off by 5 thou. While I had the head cracked I noticed a small ball valve on the Cam. I think that is the cuase of the clicking sound that I heard on my scrambler 500 1999. Has anyone had this prob?
