I need an engine for a 1996 sportman 500. I am told that repairs will exceed $2000. Is there a market out there for rebuilt engines?

The fuji 500 shows up on ebay all the time for around 5-600 bucks.

what all is wrong with the engine? I'm sure you could rebuild it for much less than 2000.

Did the dealer quote you 2000 and if so what all did the dealer say needed done.

This seams high to me since you can have a car engine totally rebuilt for about half that

Fishslab, there is a used bottom end for a Preditor on ebay right now with a good crank but bad engine case. I dont know if it will interchange.

Thanks for the tip Steve, but unfortunately they are totally different. It's got to be a Scrambler or Sportsman.

Yeah, the 400 is so much better, but replacement parts would be cheaper. tear your engine down and find everything wrong with it. If you need a new piston, dont buy a stock polaris piston. buy a wiseco, it will save you costly problems in the longrun. Big buck atv products sells replacement purp polaris parts, but they take 2 weeks to ship. This forum forbids big bucks website to be posted for some reason, maybe because it rhymes with the f bomb. I will send it to your email.

Wow, thanks for the sugestions. Sorry for the delayed reply, work got in the way....

Fishslab-

Not sure what is totally wrong, have not torn the thing completely down. 2000 is worst case, includes crank assembly, piston, oil pump, cylinder boar, valve seat, misc parts, seals, etc. and $450 labor. I was looking for alternatives to this prior to starting tear down.

Scrama-

I agree, 2000 seems high. see above for details as I know them.

Spyder-

Thanks for thr tip, I will include a 400 in my search, any one know of one?

Chevy-

Thanks for the email, I looked at some of their prices and they seem to be in line with the dealer quote. I think I will have him tear it down and inventory what is left.
