Results of Testing and Racing My Sp500 vs. sp700
Jimmypsp700 and I drag race a lot.
He has a 2002 sp700. He has aftermarket exhaust and K&N air filter.
I have a 2005 sp500 with K&N.
My quad is heavier than his by quite a bit.
His is 782# wet according to the March 2002 of ATV Magazine.
Mine is 768# wet according to a 2005 issue of ATV Magazine.
He has about 15# of accessories on it.
I have enough accessories to get mine up to 900#. I weighed it last week. See my other post.
Jimmy is about 30# heavier than me. So, with riders, my set up is about 70# heavier.
Ok, Jimmy and I did some baseline runs. All of these runs were on pavement.
All races are done to 40 mph for consistency. There is typically one quad length between my front tires and his back tires.
After the baseline runs he put on the sp800 snorkel. We did 3 runs. There was no difference.
So, with the current set up and jetting there was no difference in power for him.
Then he put his stock air filter on. I was hoping he would be slower. We did another 3 runs. Nope. NO difference. We were surprised.
Then I took off my snorkel to lean mine out a bit. We did 3 runs. No difference.
Then I put my snorkel back on and put my stock air filter back on. We did 3 runs. I was about 1.5 quad lengths behind him. So the K&N gave me a little more power since when I race him with the K&N I am only 1 quad length behine him.
All in all we were suprised that there was no difference in the power with most of those changes.
The only thing that made a difference was the addition of a K&N to my quad. That 's because when I used to run the stock air filter my plug would foul rich. So for the stock jetting on MY quad the K&N added a little air and therefore power. My plug looks right with the K&N.
In the future we will test with his stock exhaust.
As a side note, I am always impressed at how well my 500 does against his 700 to 40 mph, and I'm heavier.
I know that above 40 mph he would continue to pull on me hard. Mine tops out at about 55 mph in a short run.
Also, I was at a long steep hill over the memorial weekend and I raced silverbullet's 700 efi up the hill. It's a sand hill where about 100 people gather and race up all day. The max speed I got up to in high or low was about 18 mph just to give you an idea of how steep it is. I got a head start on the race and he blew past me like nothing. That's one place the extra CC's of the 700 shines.
So I hope this data is helpful and entertaining. Have a Nice day.
By the way, I Love My Sportsman.

I was impressed when I drove a 500 H.O. last weekend as well. There's not a lot of difference between the 500 H.O. and the 700 EFI until after around 40 or so. However, there is quite a bit of difference between the 800 EFI and the rest of the Sportsman line up.

I am also surprised at how well Jeff's 500 does up til around 40 mph, driving them mine FEELS like it has much more power and torque (thrust) but in a race it doesn't show up.
Also, I believe I am having some belt slippage off the line on pavement. I will be switching it out shortly with a Dayco and we can re-test.
From a roll it might be different also.
I have the 800 pipe to install, we'll see if it was a waste of money.
