i'm having some trail mods done to my 97 explorer 400 and was wondering what to expect. will it want to pull the wheels of the ground? what are some faster bikes it will beat in a 1/4 mile? should i get rid of the injector and pre-mix or can i use the injector and add a small amount in the tank? here are the mods i'm having done:
trail port & polish and bore .020 with wiseco piston
trail mil head
bore stock carb to 35.5
v-force delta 2 reeds
reed spacer kit
K&N filter in stock airbox
HSP pipe for explorer
team TAS-98 roller secondary clutch with 48-40-33 helix with 120-185 spring
HPD 7 primary spring and 10-58 weights

you get at least 60 hp from a good preped trail mods package,
but i'm not sure with a 35mm carb tough,,actually the explorer 400 respond better to pipe combo than the 400 scrammy, but the porting design
inside the engine aren't as wide, just a few ponies less, but the explorer
is a great trail friendly motor, giving more efficient torque down low and
still happy top end power considering the weight.you seem heavy on the weights tough... (10-58).

I don't know about an Exploer but a full trail mod on a a Scrammy is night and day compared to stock. I don't think you will have any trouble gettting the front end up. Good luck with the mods.

I have pretty much the same trail port except with the 39PWK and clamp on filter. I soundly defeated my buddys piped, jetted ,rev boxed, K&N'd Z400 up China wall in Glamis. And thats a full weight Scrambler. I cant wait to get my new rear shock worked out so I can get across the whoops faster

When mine was fully trail modded it would beat a piped, jetted and pro-flowed Raptor in 300 foot. It would really spank all the 400 four stroke sport quads. I don't think the stock carb works all that good on a ported motor. The 39pwk carb was a real boost in performance. My wifes Trail Mod bike runs really really good. I just need to get the 39pwk for her to be at the best performing end of the Trail Mod package. You will be fine on the Oil Injection. I wouldn't bother with putting oil in the gas too. Unless you are just scared that the pump might fail. Go at it. You won't be sorry. If you haven't decided on who to port your bike then consider Bubba297. He does excellent work with a fast turn around. Good luck.

Those Explorer 400's are some kick butt utility quads. Two of the guys that I race with locally race them in the utility class, both are modified with pipes, bigger carbs, different heads and airbox mods, clutch mods and both are real sleepers.
Back in either 94 or 95 RCR (Rick Ritters company) had an article in Dirt Wheels where they modified a 94 or 95 Sport 400L with head mods, bored stock carb & then 39 PWK carb, stock airbox & then clamp-on K&N, different pipe and silencer and different tires (Holeshots) and clutch mods. The times in a 300ft dragrace were faster with the 39PWK carb than with the bored stock carb, but not as much as you would think.
With my 99 Sport 400 with 21/7/10 front tires, 20/11/10 rear Turf Tamers, Pipe & Silencer, 12:1 Hot Seat Billet head, Delta 2 reedcage, reedcage spacer, 38mm TMX carb, clamp-on K&N, clutch kit and 12 tooth front sprocket/39 tooth Sidewinder rear sprocket I beat my friends KFX700/V-Force in the 1/8 mile at our local 1/8th mile dragstrip.Too be honest with you though I think that I like the stock 13 tooth front sprocket better though. The 12 tooth along with the 39 tooth rear sprocket and 2 inch shorter tires took away more top end speed than I like.
