I've had 2 2000 TB250s and 2 2002 Scrambler 400s, and they all had grease on the sealing edge from the factory. Its insurence. It goes on the part of the filter that contacts the air box.

as EAB said you would put a light coating of grease on the bottom of the filter so you get a good seal with the airbox. When you say Silicon grease I think of RTV or gasket sealant don't use that, use regular grease so you can get the filter out. I don't think it really needs it but it wouldn't hurt.

You can pick up a small tube of white grease at the auto parts store. Like EAB said, not necessary, but if you go through a lot of water, it's not a bad idea.

Silicone grease isnt a atv sealer which bonds..it"s a grease which conditions rubber and is any grease, but it isnt petroleum based..petroleum based grease deteriates
rubber which in turn ruins your filter seal....thats why K_N suggest you use white lithium whichwould be my top choice or synthetic grease....I had the silicone grease on hand so I used that.....silicone grease is used on elecrical connections to gaurd against moisture and such..

Cool, Thanks for the Info Perky I didn't know there were silicon based greases. I guess when I think of grease I automatically think of the petroleum based variety. I like to learn new things!
